Wambold Leads UCO Past Griffons

EDMOND (Feb. 23) – James Wambold wasn't deterred by the cold and wind at Wendell Simmons Field Thursday afternoon, throwing seven shutout innings to lead No. 13-ranked Central Oklahoma past Missouri Western 8-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener for both teams.

Wambold struggled in his two starts this season, giving up eight hits and seven runs in 5 2/3 innings, but the sophomore right-hander was sharp from the outset against the Griffons. He scattered four hits while walking two and striking out two in the first seven innings, leaving with a 1-0 lead.

The Bronchos added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, broke the game open with a five-run volley in the eighth and then survived some sloppy moments in the ninth.

UCO improved to 9-2 on the season while dropping MWSU to 3-4. The teams meet again Friday at 3 p.m. and the three-game series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest.

"It wasn't real pretty, but we got the job done," head coach John Martin said. "James really threw well today and our guys played solid defense behind him. Their pitchers had our number for awhile until we made some adjustments and finally got things going."

The Bronchos didn't manage a hit until the fourth inning and broke a scoreless deadlock then when Orlando Gonzalez doubled to right-center to lead off, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

It stayed 1-0 until the seventh.

Landen Wood walked to start the inning, then stole second and took third when the catcher's throw went to the outfield. Kaleb Glass was hit by pitch, Wood scored on a balk that sent Glass to second and Cameron Uselton made it 3-0 with a single to right-center.

The Griffons scored their first run in the top of the eighth, but UCO responded with a five-run outburst in its half of the inning.

Noah Olson singled to center field and Gonzalez reached on an error to start things, then pinch-hitter Camden Thrailkill reached on a fielder's choice off a sacrifice bunt to load the bases with no outs. Wood drove in the first run with a one-out single to center, Glass followed with a sacrifice fly, Jaden Parsons drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Seth Gray's RBI base hit gave the Bronchos a big 8-1 cushion.

MWSU scored three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough.

UCO finished with 10 hits, getting two each from Parsons, Uselton and Gonzalez.
