Bronchos Take Doubleheader

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rebounded from its first loss of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Mary on Saturday at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 6-1 on the season. The Bronchos blitzed Mary with a 12-3 victory in Saturday's first game before winning 7-5 in the second game. Both were seven-inning contests.

UCO and Mary, from Bismarck, North Dakota, will wrap up the four-game series with the final matchup Sunday at noon.

"We responded and that's important," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys were fighting for it early, and then we had to find a way to get it done in the second game. It's important to learn how to win those close games and I'm proud of the team for finding a way to get it done today. We need to be focused on Sunday and try to win a series."

GAME 1

UCO starter Chris Spry hit the first batter of the game and gave up an RBI single to left field with one out in the top of the first inning that put Mary on the scoreboard first. After a 10-4 setback on Friday afternoon, the visiting Marauders looked to be at it again.

However, UCO followed with a bang. Glass was also hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot, then Aiden Proctor reached on a fielding error by the Mary first baseman. Cameron Uselton followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Though Glass was thrown out at home when Seth Gray reached on a fielder's choice to third base, Noah Olson followed with a big shot. The outfielder drilled a grand slam to right center to give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead.

Mary led off the top of the second with a solo home run off Spry to get one back, but three strikeouts followed from the lefty pitcher.

Central added two more in the bottom of the third inning. Olson singled through the right side with one out and later scored on Matt Baughn's single to right field. Orlando Gonzalez singled to left after Olson and he scored on a delayed steal where Baughn held up the defense at second base. Gonzalez's run gave UCO a 6-2 lead.

Mary responded again with an RBI double in the fourth, but Spry responded again with three more strikeouts to get out of a little jam with a 6-3 lead.

UCO gave him one more run in the bottom of the fourth by way of another fielder's choice from Gray. This time Glass did score on the bases loaded play and gave the Bronchos a 7-3 lead.

The Bronchos put it away with four five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Glass scored Landen Wood with an RBI triple, and then stole home two batters later. Proctor scored on a throwing error by the Mary first baseman. Gray doubled to left to score Uselton. And Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to score Gray and make it the final, 12-3.

Olson finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Gonzalez went 2-for-4 as UCO scattered 10 hits in the game for the sixth straight game to start the season.

Spry picked up the win after 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out seven. Jeb Jenkins struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work and Jase Farmer closed the game out. Jenkins didn't allow a baserunner and Farmer only allowed one as the two shutdown Mary for the win.

GAME 2

Central Oklahoma went to Diego Dominguez for his first start with the Bronchos in the second game and UCO gave him an early lead as they did Spry earlier in the day.

Proctor singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the second and Uselton followed getting hit by a pitch. They both stole second and third after that, then Proctor scored on a wild pitch as Uselton moved to third. Olson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Uselton after Gray drew a walk. He also stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and then scored unearned on a fielding error by the Mary first baseman to give UCO the early 3-0 lead.

UCO stole six bases in the bottom of the first inning Saturday in Game 2 and also advanced two more bases on a wild pitch and passed balls.

Mary did come back and tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the second inning, where there were two errors and a passed ball.

UCO went back in front in the bottom half though. Glass and Proctor executed a double steal for the second time on the afternoon and Glass gave UCO a 4-3 lead. Proctor scored on Uselton's single to right field to make it 5-3.

Though it took until the top of the fifth inning, Mary responded again with two runs to tie the game, 5-5.

In the the bottom of the sixth, Proctor reached on an error for the third time on the afternoon, then stole second, then moved to third on a sac-bunt from Uselton. Gray followed with a big two-run home run to right center to give UCO a 7-5 lead.

Dominguez finished with two innings pitched, three unearned runs allowed, and two hits and two walks. He struck out two batters as well. Grant Zwald followed and threw 2 1/3 innings. He gave up two unearned runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out five on the day.

Aiden Bagwell picked up the win (3-0) out of the bullpen. He threw 1 2/3 innings and struck out two while only allowing one hit. Valek Cisneros came in to finish off the game with 2/3 innings of work. He walked one but struck out another as UCO closed it out.

Proctor went 2-for-4 in Game 2 while UCO managed a season-low six hits.
