Bronchos Upset At Pitt State

Central Oklahoma Drops First Game of Season In MIAA Road Contest

PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 3 Central Oklahoma suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, 75-66, in an upset in the MIAA by Pittsburg State at John Lance Arena.

Central Oklahoma shot 37.5 percent from the floor overall and only 20.8 percent from behind the 3-point line. UCO was outshot at the free-throw line too and only made 13 of 20 from the line on Saturday.

"They made a great run in the second half and we weren't able to come back from that," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They did a great job and they had a great atmosphere. We didn't win tonight, but this team is going to be fine. Pitt State is going to win a lot of games. We'll move on from this and get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma is 8-1 on the season with the setback and 3-1 in the MIAA.

Pittsburg State held a lead from the beginning of the game for the first five minutes. Luke Haasl hit the first of his two 3-pointers to give the Bronchos a 13-12 lead and the Bronchos took control from there. That started a 14-1 run by the Bronchos that lasted over seven minutes.

UCO led 33-27 at halftime.

Pitt, which ended the first half on a 6-0 run, continued that momentum in the second half. The Gorillas came out in the second half and used the ability to get to the free-throw line to turn the tide on the game.

PSU made four free-throws during an early stretch before a scorching 13-0 run midway through the second half. Haasl gave UCO a 41-36 lead with 16:40 to play, but a Gorillas 3-pointer with 13:17 left in the half gave the hosts a 49-41 lead.

Pittsburg sat on the lead from there. The Gorillas were 21-for-26 from the free-throw line in the second half as they pulled away for the upset.

Haasl led Central Oklahoma with 19 points and seven rebounds on Saturday. He had three blocked shots too. Danquez Dawsey added 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Jaden Wells scored 12 points, going 4-for-21 from the floor and 1-for-10 from behind the 3-point line.

UCO also got seven points from Majok Majouk, four points from Jalyn Turner, who added eight rebounds, and three points from Parker Hannah. Preston Aymond and Mike Quick Jr. both scored two.

Central Oklahoma will play three non-conference games next to wrap up that part of the schedule. UCO hosts Tabor College Monday night at Hamilton Field House before the Bronchos go to Las Vegas for the High Desert Classic. Central Oklahoma plays Henderson State and Missouri – St. Louis Dec. 18 and 19.
