Bronchos Drop MIAA Game Against Fort Hays State, Return In 2024 With Road Games Next Week

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma suffered its first home loss in more than a year Sunday afternoon with the fifth-ranked Bronchos falling 67-60 in MIAA game against Fort Hays State.

The Bronchos close out 2023 with a 12-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the MIAA. Fort Hays improved to 9-3 with the win and is also 4-2 in league play.

UCO, which last lost in Edmond on Dec. 8, 2022, held a halftime lead and led by as many as five points in the second half. But missed free-throws and a late surge by the visitors put the Bronchos on the wrong side of this New Year's Eve decision.

Central Oklahoma shot 38.2 percent from the floor on Sunday afternoon and went just 2-for-16 from behind the 3-point line. The Bronchos also struggled at the free-throw line, making just 16 of 28 attempts from the stripe. UCO was 6-for-16 at the line in the second half.

Danquez Dawsey led Central Oklahoma with 18 points. He went 6-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also had three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one blocked shot. Dawsey was the only Broncho in double figures.

Preston Aymond added eight points, six rebounds and four steals. He went just 1-for-3 from the floor and was 6-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Jalyn Turner and Mike Quick Jr. both scored seven points. Turner added three assists while Quick Jr. added three steals on the defensive end.

Jaden Wells and Parker Hannah both scored five points each. Those two each hit one 3-pointer, the only two for the Bronchos on the day. Wells, who became the school's all-time leader in made 3-pointers Friday night, went 1-for-7 from behind the arc on Sunday.

Luke Haasl and Matthew Willenborg both scored four points on Sunday. Haasl added eight rebounds and one block. Majok Majouk scored two points and had two steals and two blocked shots to go with that.

Central Oklahoma goes into the new year with 16 games remaining on the schedule. All 16 are MIAA contests. UCO plays just two at home in January, four at home in February, and one in March.

The Bronchos are back in action Jan. 4 at Washburn and will play Jan. 6 at Emporia State to wrap up a short, two-game road trip. UCO returns home Jan. 10 to host Northeastern State.
