UCO Drops MIAA Road Game

TOPEKA, Kan. – No. 12 Central Oklahoma suffered back-to-back losses in the regular season for the first time since 2021 following a 75-68 setback at Washburn Thursday night in an MIAA matchup at Lee Arena.
 
Central Oklahoma is now 12-3 on the season and 4-3 in the MIAA.
 
The Bronchos had a back-and-forth slugfest with Washburn Thursday night in a game that featured 16 lead changes and 11 ties. The last tie came at 60-60 with 4:53 to play in the game. Moments before, a Danquez Dawsey and-1 tied the game, 59-59 heading to the last media timeout of the night. Dawsey converted to give the Bronchos their last lead, 60-59.
 
Washburn then followed with five free-throws and a 3-pointer to cap off a crucial 8-2 run that made it 67-62 with 2:06 left. WU converted 4 of 6 at the line down the stretch to pull away from the Bronchos.
 
Jaden Wells led Central with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. He went 5-for-20 from the floor, 3-for-10 from behind the arc, and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.
 
Dawsey finished with 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. He also had one steal. Dawsey went 6-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the stripe. He missed his only two 3-point attempts.
 
UCO had to look for points from there. Fourth-year junior Preston Aymond went down with a foot injury in the first half and didn't score. Parker Hannah and Evan Barber also got on the floor, albeit minimal, and did not score.
 
Jalyn Turner added nine points to go with two rebounds and two steals. Luke Haasl chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots. Matthew Willenborg added six points and five rebounds, Majok Majouk scored three, Jarreth Ingram added two, and Mike Quick Jr. scored one.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 35.5 percent from the floor on Thursday night, making 22 of 62 attempts altogether. The Bronchos were 7-for-21, 33.3 percent, from behind the arc, and 17-for-24, 70.8 percent, from the free-throw line.
 
UCO and Washburn went back and forth all night. There were eight lead changes and two ties in the first half as the two teams went at it.
 
Central Oklahoma is back in action this weekend. The Bronchos visit Emporia State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. UCO is home next week for two MIAA contests against Northeastern State (Jan. 10) and Rogers State (Jan. 13).
