Central Oklahoma Outlasts Mary

Bronchos Beat Marauders from North Dakota 55-51 In Scrappy Win

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – No. 9 Central Oklahoma improved to 3-0 on the season with a 55-51 win over Mary (N.D.) Friday afternoon in the Central Region Challenge at Northeastern State.

The Bronchos shot a tough 33.9 percent from the floor with only Jaden Wells scoring in double figures. But the UCO defense was solid, holding Mary to 38.1 percent, forcing 16 turnovers, and earning a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points.

"We did a lot of little things right today and that was really big for us," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Our offense struggled, we couldn't buy a basket, but the guys found other ways to get it done. That's a good sign. We're happy with it. But we do need to play better tomorrow."

Central Oklahoma is back on the floor Saturday at 3 p.m. to face off against Northwestern Oklahoma State.

Wells led the Bronchos on Friday, scoring 22 points on 6 of 17 shooting. The fourth-year junior standout made three 3-pointers and went 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. Wells also had a team-high eight rebounds and one steal.

Jalyn Turner scored eight points, going 2-for-2 from the field – both 3-pointers – and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. The fifth-year senior added three rebounds and two steals.

Danquez Dawsey posted seven points, five rebounds, and five assists. He was 3-for-10 from the floor, hit one free-throw, and also had two steals.

Preston Aymond (six points and seven rebounds) and Luke Haasl (four points and seven rebounds) were key too for the Bronchos.

Ben Averitt (four), Jarreth Ingram (two) and Majok Majouk (two), gave UCO 10 bench points on Friday.

Central Oklahoma struggled on offense in the first half, but so did Mary. The Bronchos though put together an 8-0 run in four minutes late in the first half to go in front 20-12. The halftime score was just 20-15.

Mary opened the second half on an 11-2 run though, and took a 26-22 lead with more than 15 minutes to play in the game. It was a five-point game with 12 minutes left before Wells got hot.

He hit a 3-pointer to cut it to two, 31-29, then a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 31, and then a fast break jump shot that gave UCO a 33-31 lead with 11:11 to play. Wells scored again to make it 36-32.

Turner knocked down a 3-pointer to give UCO a 39-32 lead, and Wells followed with another three to make it 10, 42-32. Mary got it back down to four points on a few occasions down the stretch but could never get closer as UCO shut down the Marauders from Bismarck, North Dakota in the end.

An and-1 from Dawsey gave UCO a 53-45 lead and Wells iced the game with two free-throws with eight seconds left to make it 55-49. Mary scored as time expired to cut it back to four for the last time.
