Central Oklahoma Overpowers Northwestern

Ninth-Ranked Bronchos Are Too Much In 58-41 Victory

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma flexed its strengths in many ways Saturday as the ninth-ranked Bronchos put away Northwestern Oklahoma State 58-41 in the Central Region Classic.
 
UCO improved to 4-0 on the season after two weeks of play. The Bronchos make their home debut in one week, hosting Southwestern Christian Sunday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.
 
Saturday, Central had its ways with the Rangers from Alva, Oklahoma. UCO went back and forth for a few minutes before opening up a massive 16-0 run in the first half.
 
Jaden Wells and Ben Averitt both made baskets to give UCO a 10-7 lead with over 12 minutes left in the half. Then Majok Majouk, Mike Quick Jr., Danquez Dawsey, and Wells all sank 3-pointers to push the Broncho lead to 22-7 with 6:34 left until halftime. Central went 4-for-5 from behind the arc during the 16-0 run.
 
Northwestern did fight back and get the 15-point lead down to four, with 1:31 to go till halftime. Wells earned three free-throws with four seconds left and made all three to give Central Oklahoma a 28-21 halftime lead.
 
The Bronchos opened the second half with two spurts that put control on the game. UCO had an 8-2 and a 7-0 run before and after a Northwestern 3-pointer. By the first media timeout, UCO led by 17 points, 43-26.
 
Central had its biggest lead of the game just after the next media timeout, 49-28, with 9:04 to play in the game. Northwestern couldn't get closer than 14 points from there as the Bronchos ran away from the Rangers.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 43.4 percent on Saturday, making 23 of 53 shots. The Bronchos were 6-for-17 from behind the arc and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
 
Wells led Central Oklahoma with 19 points on 6 of 12 shooting. The fourth-year junior hit two 3-pointers and went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also had three steals to help the UCO effort on defense.
 
Wells finished the second week of the season with 41 points. He has 90 in four games this season, 22.5 per game, and has moved up to No. 17 on Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list. Wells has 1,304 points in his career (2020-23).
 
Luke Haasl had a big game for the Bronchos Saturday too. He played 21 minutes and posted eight points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. He also added one assist. Haasl went 4-for-8 from the floor and pulled down five offensive rebounds.
 
Dawsey had another well-rounded outing. The true junior guard from Lawton, Oklahoma had seven points, eight rebounds, and four assists to go along with one steal. Dawsey did a little bit of everything and went 3-for-9 from the floor with one 3-pointer on his only attempt from behind the arc.
 
The Bronchos got 34 points from those three starters. UCO also got 24 points from its bench.
 
Quick Jr. scored seven to lead the effort off the bench. Majouk added six points, and Averitt four. Matthew Willenborg hit one 3-pointer in just over four minutes of action. Jarreth Ingram and Evan Barber both made baskets in their time on the floor too.
 
The bench also had eight assists on 10 made baskets, pushing the starting group that had five assists on 13 made baskets.
 
Central Oklahoma completes a four-game road trip to open the season with a 4-0 record. The Bronchos won twice in Florida and twice in Tahlequah. Now UCO will play the next four at home, beginning with Southwestern Christian Sunday Nov. 19 at Hamilton Field House. Central also hosts Tabor College (Kan., NAIA), Central Missouri and Lincoln after Thanksgiving.
