Bronchos Win Finale

Central Oklahoma Flew Past The Newman Jets Sunday On The Final Day Of The 2023 Regular Season

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma earned a 4-0 win over Newman on the final day of the 2023 season to clinch a berth in the postseason tournament next week.

UCO improved to 6-6-6 overall on the season and 3-4-4 in the MIAA. The Bronchos ended the year in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings. Central Oklahoma will be the No. 7 seed in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship, beginning Nov. 3 with the quarterfinal round.

Central Oklahoma will travel to No. 2 Central Missouri on Friday, Nov. 3. The four semifinalists will convene in Wichita, Kansas at Stryker Sports Complex for the semis on Nov. 9 with the 2023 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship match scheduled for Nov. 11.

"I'm proud of the team for finishing strong this weekend," UCO head women's soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We had a lot of things not go our way, but the team put their heads down and found a way to get two wins this weekend and we needed both of them."

Central Oklahoma had to win Sunday to clinch a spot. Amaya Grace, a fifth-year senior forward, took matters into her own hands early in the match.

In the 15th minute, Grace got the ball on the right side of the box, dribbled in a few yards to open space, and fired with her left foot to score and give UCO a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the 28th, Harmony Turner sent a cross into the box from the left side and found Grace on the backside. Grace again quickly corralled the ball and took a shot to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match.

That's how the game went to halftime, with UCO outshooting Newman 13-5 in the opening 45 minutes.

After halftime, and after several hours of rain in Edmond, which had already forced the match from the natural grass surface at Tom Thompson Field to the artificial turf at Chad Richison Stadium, officials determined that making it to the 70-minute mark would suffice for the game per NCAA rules.

And just before that time expired, Grace was at it again. She scored another unassisted goal from the left side of the box on a breakaway to give UCO a 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute.

Kassidy Collins, one of five seniors honored before the game playing the final home game of their careers, also added a scored an unassisted goal to make it 4-0 in the 66th minute.

Caroline Faulkner, another senior day honoree, played all 70 minutes in goal for the Bronchos. Newman took just seven total shots and put three on goal – all saved by Faulkner.

Central Oklahoma outshot Newman 23-7 in the match. The Bronchos had 14 shots on goal to just three from Newman.
