UCO Season Ends In Quarterfinals

Central Oklahoma Falls 2-1 At Central Missouri In Season Ending Loss

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Central Oklahoma had its season come to an end Friday with a 2-1 loss at Central Missouri in the 2023 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals.

The Bronchos finished the season 6-7-6 overall.

"I'm proud of this team for never giving up," UCO head women's soccer coach Mike Cook said. "Things didn't go how we expected, but the team kept fighting. They found a way to make it to the tournament. And even today, they kept fighting until the end. I'm proud of this team."

Friday not only marked the end of the season for the Bronchos, but the end of a Hall of Fame career for Cook. The 25th-year head coach started the UCO soccer program in 1998 and 353 wins later, Cook retires as the only coach Central has even known.

Cook won 441 games in his career, including 353 at Central over the past 25 years. He led the Bronchos to 15 national tournament appearances and won seven conference championships. Cook coached 72 all-conference selections, 47 all-region selections, and 11 All-Americans.

But Friday afternoon, after a back-and-forth first half left the Bronchos with a 2-1 deficit, a stalemate of a second half spelled the end of the run for Cook and Central Oklahoma.

Amaya Grace scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season. The First Team All-MIAA selection got a pass from Second Team All-MIAA pick Emma Nicholas. This pass from midfield put Grace on a breakaway. The forward raced in front of her defender and fired a shot from the top of the box, burying home the equalizing score.

It was 1-1 in the 24th minute of play.

However, UCM, which scored the first goal in the 19th minute, added another in the 41st to go in front 2-1.

Central Missouri outshot Central Oklahoma 20-12 on Friday, including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Bronchos took five shots in the first half and seven shots in the second half.

Avery Bass played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Bronchos. The sophomore keeper made seven saves on the day.

Central Missouri advances to the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship semifinals to be played next weekend in Wichita, Kansas.
