UCO Beats Rogers, Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Central Oklahoma Earns 2-1 Win Friday Night In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma kept its playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Rogers State Friday night in a crucial MIAA tilt at Chad Richison Stadium.

The Bronchos, now 5-6-6 overall on the season and 2-4-4 in the MIAA, moved in front of Rogers State (6-9-2, 3-7-0) for eighth place in the league standings. There is only one game left on anyone's schedule and that is Sunday at 1 p.m. for the Bronchos against Newman. For UCO to make the playoffs, it's simple – just win. UCO could draw or lose and still get in with help from others but win and you're in is the name of the game on Sunday.

"We played well enough tonight to get the win," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "I think we could've done better in some areas, but we got a win and that's what is important. We need to remain focused for the final game so we can keep playing next week."

The 2023 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship begins Friday, Nov. 3 with the quarterfinals. The top four teams in the league will host the first round. The four advancing teams will all meet in Wichita, Kansas for the semifinals on Nov. 9. The 2023 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11.

UCO grabbed an early advantage on Friday night against Rogers State. Amaya Grace took a corner kick that found its way back out to her on the far sideline. She sent in another cross just like a corner kick and Kylee Wickersham measured it up perfectly, heading home the game's first score in the 17th minute from the back side of the 6-yard box.

Grace then added to the lead, taking matters into her own hands (or feet). The fifth-year senior from Texas found a little space at the top of the 18-yard box and maneuvered around for a moment before firing a shot and scoring to make it 2-0 in the 29th minute.

Rogers State equalized late in the first half. With five minutes remaining, RSU leader Alix Tirado darted down the right side of the field past everyone before slipping a shot passed Central Oklahoma goalkeeper Avery Bass. That made it 2-1 in the 41st minute. That's how the game went to halftime, and that's how the game ultimately ended.

UCO took 16 total shots in the game, including 10 in the second half. The Bronchos put just six of those on target though, including three in the second half. Rogers State took nine total shots and put four on goal. Bass made three saves, one in the first half and two in the second, to earn the win.

Central also managed four corner kicks to RSU's three. And there were five fouls whistled against the Bronchos to four for Rogers State.

Central Oklahoma faces Newman on Sunday at Chad Richison Stadium. The Bronchos beat the Jets from Wichita 5-0 earlier this season in south Kansas. UCO is 9-0-4 all time against Newman.
