UCO Tripped By Lady Hornets

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dropped its third straight contest Sunday afternoon, falling to Emporia State 2-1 in an MIAA affair at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 4-6-6 overall on the season and 1-4-4 in the MIAA. The Bronchos dipped out of the top eight in the MIAA standings Sunday and are now 10th with two games left on the schedule. UCO needs at least one win if not two next week to clinch a spot in the 2023 MIAA Women's Soccer Championship next month.

"Kind of like Friday, I thought we played well and it stinks to come away with no points after that," UCO head women's soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They're a really good team and they have the best goal scorer in the conference, but we did a good job holding them back. We controlled the game a lot. But in the end, they got a lead and we couldn't. We have to forget about it and just try to finish strong next week."

Central Oklahoma hosts Rogers State Friday night and Newman Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos are two points behind RSU, which sits eighth in the league standings heading into the final weekend.

Sunday, UCO took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute against Emporia thanks to super senior Amaya Grace. The Little Elm, Texas native beat a defender and the ESU goalkeeper to punch in a chip shot and put the Bronchos in front.

However, in a mere 10 seconds, Emporia went right down the field and scored to level the match. ESU's Hannah Woolery slipped behind the defense and flicked a shot with her left foot to sneak in the game-tying score.

Then in the 70th minute, Emporia made it 2-1 with another strike. Central never recovered.

UCO took 11 shots in the game to Emporia's seven. The Lady Hornets did earn a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Emporia also managed seven corners to UCO's four. Both teams committed 10 fouls, with two yellow cards being issued to ESU players.

Caroline Faulkner played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos and made three saves.
