UCO Drops MIAA Matchup With Washburn

Central Oklahoma Falls In First Of Four Season-Ending Home Games

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dropped a 2-1 decision to Washburn Friday afternoon in an MIAA contest at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos fell to 4-5-6 overall on the season and UCO is now 1-3-4 in the MIAA. Washburn, which is ranked No. 8 in the country, is 13-1-1 on the year and 7-0-1 in league play.

"We played a really good game to get out of here without any points," UCO head women's soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They're a really good team that knows how to limit chances, but we got plenty of chances. I really wish for the girls we could've got it done because we played really well today."

Central Oklahoma trailed 1-0 at halftime but had outshot the Ichabods from Topeka, Kansas 7-6. In the second half, UCO turned it up even more and put the top-rated guests on their heels.

Amaya Grace scored in the 49th minute to tie the game. She gathered the ball around 30 yards out in the middle of the field, made a move to beat one defender, and then slipped by the goalkeeper too and tapped in an easy shot to make it 1-1.

Moments later, with UCO earning a corner kick, Grace lined up to take in the northeast corner of the field. She put the ball in the air, hooking over the defense and into the back of the net. The rare "golazo" put the Bronchos ahead 2-1, however, the officials waved off the goal for a foul in the box.

Not long after that, Washburn went down the field to score and take a 2-1 lead. The Ichabods never let up after that.

UCO outshot WU 7-5 in the second half for a 14-11 advantage in the game. Defensively, Caroline Faulkner made five saves in the game. The junior from Tulsa had moved over 100 career saves last week, becoming just the ninth player to ever accomplish that feat. Friday, she moved up to 106 career saves and is now in eighth place on Central Oklahoma's all-time saves list.

Central Oklahoma is back at home this weekend. The Bronchos host Emporia State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
