Bronchos Draw Again, Tie Southern At Home

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma used a set-piece goal in the final minute to pull even with Missouri Southern and the Bronchos took a 1-1 tie in the MIAA matchup at Tom Thompson Field Sunday afternoon.

UCO has tied three consecutive matches to start league play. The Bronchos are 3-2-5 overall on the season, and now 0-0-3 in the MIAA.

"We had so many chances and didn't get it done," UCO head women's soccer coach Mike Cook said. "It's disappointing to not come out of here with a win. The good thing is, we found a way to tie, but we know that we can be better and we need to be."

Central Oklahoma outshot Missouri Southern (0-8-2, 0-2-1 MIAA) 22-5 over the course of 90 minutes on Sunday. The Bronchos also had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. But it wasn't until the 90th minute that UCO got on the scoreboard.

Madison Linavong took a corner kick from the southwest corner of the field. She put the ball right in front of the net, where Kylee Wickersham used her head to redirect the ball into the back of the net. That tied the match, 1-1, with 51 seconds remaining.

The game seemed to be heading to a scoreless draw, as UCO's Friday night contest with No. 10 Central Missouri ended. But Missouri Southern had other plans. In the 84th minute, the Lions had the ball on the end line when a pass from Kennedy Williams found Aisley Stevens with room on the right side of the 6-yard box. She fired and scored and gave MSSU a 1-0 lead.

The Lions almost held on for their first win of the season.

Caroline Faulkner played the full 90 in goal for the Bronchos. After earning her first shutout of the season Friday night, the fourth-year junior almost had another clean sheet. She made one save and is now at 89 career saves for the Bronchos, 10th in school history.

Lauren Piper took a career-high nine shots on Sunday, putting four on goal. The sophomore from Texas had several header chances. Amaya Grace took three shots and put one on goal. Linavong and Wickersham both took two shots. Six other Bronchos took one shot in the game.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road again next week. The Bronchos visit Nebraska Kearney for a Friday afternoon MIAA contest before visiting Fort Hays State next Sunday in Hays, Kansas.
