No. 8 UCO Clips Riverhawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – No. 8 Central Oklahoma ran its win streak to seven games with a gutsy 74-65 win over Northeastern State in an MIAA battle Thursday night.

A trio of Bronchos scored in double figures to lead UCO to a 14-1 overall record and an MIAA best 8-1 record.

"We had a lot of energy in the second half and that was big for us," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We were better in the second half and everyone did a great job. Rebounding was good. Energy was good. We earned that one."

Jaden Wells led the Bronchos with 19 points while Curtis Haywood and Camryn Givens both scored 15 points.

Preston Aymond scored nine while Danquez Dawsey and Jalyn Turner both added eight to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

There were six ties and 10 lead changes in Thursday night's fight between 100-year old rivals. However, nine of those lead changes happened in the first half. When UCO took a 38-36 lead on a Dawsey driving layup with 18:15 to play in the second half, the Bronchos never trailed again.

It was tied 38-38 moments later, but Haywood knocked down a pair of free-throws right after that to give UCO the lead for good.

Haywood was strong in all aspects of the game on Thursday night. The senior from Mustang, Oklahoma had 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists to go with three steals. He was 5-for-11 overall and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Wells led the Bronchos with 19 points on 5 of 13 shooting. He went 3-for-8 from behind the 3-point line and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. He added five boards.

Givens scored 15 points on 3 of 9 shooting, hit 2 of 4 threes, and 7 of 9 free-throws. He also had six rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Central Oklahoma finished the game shooting 43.1 percent, hitting 22 of 51 shots. The Bronchos were 6 of 17 from behind the 3-point line. UCO finished 24 of 27 from the free-throw line.

UCO continues its short road trip Saturday with the Bronchos visiting Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma. Central will return home after that for a pair of MIAA games next week at Hamilton Field House.
