A Dozen In A Row For UCO

No. 4 Central Oklahoma Beats Pitt State In MIAA Road Win

PITTSBURG, Kan. – No. 4 Central Oklahoma continued to get the best effort from its opponents, but the Bronchos also continued to find a way to get it done as UCO beat Pittsburg State 80-70 Thursday in MIAA action.

Central Oklahoma improved to 19-1 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 13-1 in the MIAA. Thursday marked the 12th consecutive victory for UCO.

"I'm thankful they found a way to get it done," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "They never quit. Pittsburg hit a lot of shots early, but the guys never quit. They kept fighting. I'm so proud of them."

UCO erased a near 20-point deficit to earn a 10-point victory. The Bronchos shot 52.6 percent from the floor and had four score in double figures to lead the way.

Curtis Haywood scored a team-high 19 points to go with five boards and five assists. Preston Aymond added a career-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds. Camryn Givens scored 14 points with seven boards. And Jaden Wells added 10 points and four rebounds.

UCO and PSU went back and forth in a high-scoring, spirited first five minutes. The Bronchos opened the game on a 10-3 run to take an early lead, but the Gorillas stormed back and earned a lead, 18-17, with 13:05 to play.

Pittsburg State led 26-22 when Callen Haydon, who had missed 14 games with a broken hand, scored on a driving layup to cut it to two points. Haydon was fouled on the play and slapped on the injured hand. He missed the free-throw and Pitt State followed with a 16-0 run to go up 42-24. That marked the largest deficit of the first half, as Central Oklahoma made a late 12-4 rally to cut it to 10 at halftime, 46-36.

But the Bronchos came out firing in the second half. UCO outscored PSU 16-7 in the first seven minutes of the second half to cut the lead to one point, 53-52. Pitt went back in front by three, but another brief 6-2 run capped by Jalyn Turner's driving layup gave UCO a 58-57 lead.

Pittsburg State took one final lead, 62-60, but after Haydon tied the game with a floater, Aymond responded with four straight points to give the Bronchos a lead they never let go of. UCO outscored Pitt State 20-8 in the final seven minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Haydon finished with six points, three rebounds and two assists in his return to the floor. Luke Haasl also scored six points to go with three rebounds and three blocked shots. Danquez Dawsey also scored five points and Turner finished with two.

Central Oklahoma continues a short road trip Saturday at Missouri Southern. The Bronchos play in Joplin Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. UCO will return home next week for a pair of MIAA games against Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State.
