No. 4 Central Oklahoma Tripped In Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma made a trip to Missouri Southern hoping to avenge its only loss of the season Saturday afternoon, but instead, MSSU knocked off the Bronchos again.

Southern 66, Central Oklahoma 59.

UCO held a lead for most of the game before a late Missouri Southern rally turned the tide. The Bronchos led 29 minutes and 53 seconds, but when the host Lions took a 48-46 lead with 8:54 to play in the second half, UCO never recovered.

"They're a really good team and they played well in the second half," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We did good in the first half, but they played better. Credit to them. They beat us."

Central Oklahoma is now 19-2 on the season and 13-2 in the MIAA. UCO remains in first place in the league standings heading to the final month of the season.

Camryn Givens led the Bronchos with 22 points and had five rebounds. Curtis Haywood added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Central Oklahoma shot 37.3 percent in the game, 31.8 percent from behind the 3-point line, and 70 percent from the free-throw line. UCO made 7 of 22 3-point attempts and 14 of 20 free-throws.

UCO jumped out to an early lead and controlled the first half. Givens knocked down a 3-pointer less than a minute into the action Saturday afternoon and gave UCO a 3-2 lead. He hit another – and another. Givens, whose name appears in the Top 20 in Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list, scored 15 of the first 22 points for the Bronchos in the first half.

Givens outscored MSSU 15-11 in the first 10:52 of the game, with his pull up jumper giving the Bronchos a 22-11 lead. That would be Central's biggest lead of the first half, with Southern getting as close as six later in the half.

The Bronchos stalled out offensively down the stretch, but still led 26-20 at halftime.

UCO kept that marginal lead for the half of the second half, but when Southern made a 7-0 run to take a 49-46 lead, the Lions never looked back.

UCO cut it to two points on a few late occasions, but couldn't overcome the deficit in the end.

Central Oklahoma returns home next week for a pair of MIAA games. The Bronchos host Nebraska Kearney Thursday, Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. and will welcome Fort Hays State to Hamilton Field House on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:30 p.m. UCO has four home games and three road games in February to close out the regular season.
