Bronchos Blank Nebraska-Kearney

EDMOND (Sept. 30) – Monika McGee and Madison Linavong scored first-half goals and 11th-ranked Central Oklahoma rode a dominating defensive effort to a 2-0 shutout of Nebraska-Kearney Friday night at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos controlled the action throughout, finishing with a huge 24-6 advantage in shots. The Lopers didn't manage a single shot in the final 45 minutes as UCO spent the majority of the second half on UNK's side of the field.

"We played pretty well, especially defensively," head coach Mike Cook said. "We missed on a lot of good opportunities and need to clean that up moving forward, but it was a good win."

The Bronchos improved to 8-1-2 on the season and 3-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with their fourth shutout. UCO is back home Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown with unbeaten Fort Hays State (8-0-3, 3-0-1), which beat Newman 2-0 Friday night.

McGee scored in the 31st minute, taking a nice feed from Amaya Grace and knocking in a shot from close range to the left corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Linavong tallied her fourth score of the year five minutes later, powering a shot from 10 yards out that UNK's goalkeeper initially knocked down, but the ball's momentum carried it over the line for the goal.

That made it 2-0, which was more than enough for UCO's stout defense. The Bronchos had several excellent scoring chances in the final half, but came up empty handed.

Olivia Vigil went the distance in goal and made an acrobatic save on the only shot at the net she faced, leaping to bat a hard-hit ball over the top of the goal late in the first half.
