No. 11 UCO Plays Tigers To Draw

EDMOND – No. 11 Central Oklahoma almost handed Fort Hays State its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon but a late own-goal by the Bronchos left the match tied, 1-1.

"We played well but one little mishap cost us," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We think we could have done more to get more chances, but we didn't. We'll take the tie and move on and try to be better next weekend for our last home games of the season."

Central Oklahoma is now 8-1-3 on the season and the Bronchos have a 3-1-1 record in MIAA play. Fort Hays is 8-0-4 overall and is 3-0-2 in league play.

Lauren Piper scored the game's first goal. The freshman forward was taken down just outside the box early in the match. The referee awarded the free kick at about 19 yards out and Piper lined up to take the kick herself.

She bent it right around the Hays wall and hooked it back left past the keeper for the score to give Central Oklahoma a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

The game stayed that way for over an hour. Both teams took eight shots in the first half, with Fort Hays State holding a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Fort Hays had possession of the ball as the clock entered the 65th minute and the Tigers got a throw in deep in their attacking third. The Hays player launched a long throw right in front of the UCO goal and Central's Adria Ramirez misplayed a header. The ball bounced backward right into the net and the match was tied, 1-1.

Fort Hays ended with a 13-11 advantage in total shots taken and a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Caroline Faulkner played all 90 minutes for the Bronchos in goal and made four saves on the day.

Central Oklahoma has just two home games left this season. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Missouri Western on Friday at 7 p.m. and then will welcome Northwest Missouri next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Field.
