UCO Comeback Try Falls Short

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Sept. 26) – A gallant comeback effort fell agonizingly short for Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos dropped a hard-fought five set decision to Pittsburg State Monday night.

The Bronchos lost the first two sets before rallying to take the next two, but PSU prevailed in a tense fifth-set battle to earn the 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 19-17 victory. UCO fell to 15-2 on the season and 5-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the loss.

"I was proud of the way we battled back after getting down 2-0, but we came up a little short," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "It was a tough match from the start and neither team backed down."

The Gorillas seemed in control after taking the first two sets, but UCO didn't fold in coming back to force a fifth set that was a back-and-forth battle from the outset.

The Bronchos led 12-11 after a Sydney Huck kill, were up 13-12 following a PSU error and were serving with a chance to win the match after going ahead 14-13 on a Maegan Lacy kill.

Pitt State tied it at 14-all before Lindsey Houran's dump at the net made it 15-14. The Gorillas scored the next two points to move in front 16-15 with a chance to end it, but kills by Houran and Huck put UCO back on top 17-16.

The comeback fell short, however, as PSU scored the final three points to pull out the thrilling win.

Huck led the Bronchos, hitting .311 with 24 kills and 10 digs. Mallorie Koehn had 19 kills and 10 digs, while Lacy, Jenna Karp and Lari Migliorino chipped in nine kills apiece.

Houran distributed a season-high 64 assists to go along with five kills and Jaedynn Evans finished with a career-best 38 digs.

UCO looked in trouble after dropping the first two sets, but the Bronchos stayed alive with the third-set win, never trailing after jumping out to a 6-2 lead on two Huck kills. It was 9-4 after a Huck ace and the lead was six at 19-13 when Karp and Migliorino teamed up for a block.

PSU was within four at 23-19, but the Bronchos closed out the win on an ace by Houran and Huck kill.

Central pulled even with its clutch fourth-set win, scoring four straight points to break away from an early 4-4 tie to take the lead for good. Koehn's kill gave the Bronchos a seven-point lead at 13-6 and it was 16-9 after a Huck smash.

The Gorillas rallied, getting within 20-19 before UCO finished strong. Koehn had two kills, Huck one and Houran an ace as the lead grew to 24-19 and Koehn followed a PSU point with her fifth kill of the set to finish it off.

The Bronchos go back on the road Friday, traveling to Warrensburg, Mo. to face No. 18-ranked Central Missouri.
