Upset Special!

EDMOND (Sept. 22) – Sydney Huck and Mallorie Koehn combined for 14 kills in a key third-set win that propelled Central Oklahoma to a stunning upset of No. 6-ranked Washburn Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Ichabods – last year's NCAA Division II national runner-up – took the first set 25-23 before UCO tied the match with a 25-18 second-set triumph. The Bronchos grabbed the momentum with a gritty 25-22 third-set victory as Huck knocked down eight kills and Koehn had six.

Edgar Miraku's crew then finished off the stunner in dominating fashion, whipping Washburn 25-13 in the fourth and final set. UCO improved to 14-1 on the season and 4-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"Our girls showed up to play tonight and I couldn't be more proud," said Miraku, whose team is back on the court at 3:30 p.m. Friday to host Emporia State. "We played well and beat a great team tonight. Our crowd was really into the match and I thought that gave us a big boost.

"Now we have to build on this and come out tomorrow ready to go again."

The Bronchos had season-high .329 attack percentage in the match, accumulating 62 kills against just 16 errors in 140 attacks.

Huck finished with 21 kills, while Koehn hit .308 with 16 kills to go along with five service aces. Lari Migliorino had eight kills and no errors in 11 attempts in hitting a sizzling .727 and Brynn Egger also made eight kills.

Lindsey Houran had another brilliant outing distributing the ball, piling up 53 assists and adding four kills. Jaedynn Evans (24 digs), Katie Le (11) and Josie Thomas (11) all provided crucial back-row defense for UCO.

There were 16 ties and six lead changes in the opening set and the Bronchos led 23-22 after a Jenna Karp kill at the net, but WU scored the final three points to take the win.

UCO answered right back in the second set, getting two quick kills from Huck in grabbing a 6-3 lead. It was a six-point cushion at 17-11 on Egger's shot down the line and the Bronchos went on to close out the win, getting a set-ending ace from Houran.

Then came the pivotal third set and it was another back-and-forth battle. Consecutive Koehn aces had UCO on top 5-2 early, but the Ichabods scored three straight to tie it and it was close the rest of the way.

The Bronchos went up 18-15 on a Koehn kill, though WU never went away. The lead was 23-22 when an attack error gave UCO the serve and Koehn put the set away with a powerful attack that the Ichabods couldn't handle.

Washburn led 4-3 early in the fourth set before the Bronchos took control. Migliorino had three blocks and a kill in a 9-1 run that put UCO ahead 12-5 and it was 15-6 after Koehn delivering back-to-back aces for the second time in the match.

The Bronchos kept the pressure on and pulled steadily away from there to polish off the upset that ended a five-match losing streak to Washburn.
