UCO Remains Unbeaten With Draw in Tahlequah

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – No. 7 Central Oklahoma remained unbeaten Sunday afternoon with a 2-2 tie at Northeastern State.

The Bronchos are 5-0-1 on the season. The match was a non-conference contest between the two MIAA schools.

"We're pleased to get the tie when we were down late, but we feel like we should have won," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We weren't our best at times and NSU took advantage of that. But we did get the tie so there is a positive."

Central Oklahoma scored first, but found itself down 2-1 late in the game before a penalty gave the Bronchos a chance to pull even.

Madison Linavong scored the game's first goal in the 53rd minute and Eden Jones converted the PK in the 84th. Caroline Faulkner played all 90 in goal in made three saves.

The teams played the first 45 scoreless, with Northeastern State holding a 6-1 advantage in shots. NSU put two of those six attempts on frame. Faulkner saved both shots on goal.

UCO put its only shot on goal in the 17th minute. Zoe Ross raced ahead to a ball and got her right foot on it but couldn't put enough behind it to get it past the NSU keeper.

Central Oklahoma broke the scoreless tie eight minutes into the second half. Kylee Wickersham sent a ball from UCO's defensive third all the way to NSU's defender. As the Riverhawk player tried to move it back the other direction, Linavong pressured and deflected a pass off the NSU players foot. That left her and the ball one-on-one against the goalkeeper. Linavong tapped in a shot to the right, too far for any defender to reach, and the Bronchos had the 1-0 lead.

The UCO lead however, was short lived. Northeastern State equalized with a goal in the 63rd minute and then took a 2-1 lead in the 75th.

UCO kept hope alive late and it paid off. In the 84th minute, Kassidy Collins was trying to corral a pass from Linavong on the right side of the box when she was shoved to the ground by an NSU defender. The referee awarded a penalty kick to the Bronchos and Jones stepped up and buried it into the back of the net, tying the match 2-2 with 6:54 left in the game.

Central had some close opportunities late, but couldn't find another score.

The NCAA this summer announced there would be no more overtime in college soccer and Sunday afternoon, the Bronchos felt the rule change. Rather than playing two, 10-minute overtime periods before declaring a tie, the match was stopped at 90 minutes, tied 2-2.

NSU outshot UCO 10-8 in the game and 5-3 in shots on goal.

Central Oklahoma will play two home games next weekend at Tom Thompson Field in Edmond. The Bronchos host Rogers State Friday night at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the season. UCO will then host Northeastern State in the first MIAA contest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
