UCO Moves To 12-0 With Win Over Lions

EDMOND (Sept. 10) – A trio of players had double-digit kills as Central Oklahoma slipped past Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House to keep its unbeaten start intact.

Sydney Huck led the way with 20 kills, while Jenna Karp had 14 and Mallorie Koehn 13 in a 23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 victory. The Bronchos moved to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

It's the third-best start to a season in school history, trailing just 2015 (15-0) and 2016 (13-0).

"It wasn't always pretty, but we got the job done," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We played well for stretches, then really struggled at times. I'm proud of the way we stayed with it despite not playing our best and any win in this league is a good one."

Karp had a sizzling .500 attack percentage, collecting her season-high 14 kills in 22 attacks with three errors while adding four blocks. Huck's 22 kills came in 50 attempts with four miscues as she hit .360 in addition to having 19 digs and three service aces.

The Bronchos also got seven kills from Hannah Barry. Lindsey Houran handed out a season-high 56 assists to go with 13 digs and four kills, while Jaedynn Evans made 29 digs.

UCO appeared like it would cruise in the opening set after opening up a 16-9 lead, but the Lions went on a 12-4 run to take a 21-20 lead and went on to take the two-point victory.

The Bronchos never trailed in the second set, grabbing a quick 2-0 lead on kills by Huck and Karp. Huck finished with eight kills in the set and Katie Le had three consecutive aces in helping UCO to an easy win that tied the match.

Central trailed early in the third set before getting kills from Huck, Koehn and Karp in a 4-1 spurt to move in front to stay at 11-9. MSSU stayed close and it was 23-21 late before back-to-back kills by Huck and Brynn Egger ended it.

The Lions went up 4-2 early in the fourth set, but UCO reeled off eight straight points to take control. Karp ripped a kill down the middle to start that streak, Huck had three aces and Koehn a pair of kills as the Bronchos went up 10-4 and MSSU never got any closer

UCO continues league play next weekend with road matches at Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney.
