Bronchos Win Again

Central Oklahoma Tops Fort Hays State To Improve To 13-0

HAYS, Kan. – Central Oklahoma kept its unbeaten streak going with a 3-1 win at Fort Hays State in MIAA play.

The Bronchos improved to 13-0 on the season, which ties the second-best start in school history. UCO opened the 2014 season 15-0. Central Oklahoma plays at No. 8 Nebraska Kearney on Saturday afternoon.

"We played well tonight and that's a good way to start a road trip," UCO head volleyball coach Edgar Miraku said. "We got a good team effort from everyone. We've got a big match tomorrow and we need stay focused on playing how we've been playing."

Lindsey Houran dished out 50 assists and Mallorie Koehn led Central Oklahoma with 14 kills. Sydney Huck chipped in a dozen kills and Jaedynn Evans led the defense with 28 digs. Jenna Karp, who had seven kills and a match-high three aces, had one solo and eight block-assists.

UCO dominated the first set on Friday night in Hays, Kansas. The Bronchos took a 3-0 lead and never looked back. UCO led 13-7 when Hannah Barry put home one of her three first-set kills and that started a huge 9-0 run by the Bronchos.

Huck had two kills during the rally and Karp had one. The two also teamed up for a block while FHSU had a bad set and four attack errors.

Central won the first set, 25-9.

Fort Hays did respond with a 25-20 win in the second set. The Bronchos tied the set on three occasions, but a .122 hitting percentage in the frame gave way for the Tigers to tie the match, 1-1.

The third set saw the first lead change of the match. UCO went ahead early with Karp opening the set with a kill. Hays took a 3-2 lead on Maegan Lacy's attack error, but the Bronchos were back in front, 7-6, on a Hays error. Central was down 6-4 before a 6-0 run that ended with a Houran kill prompted a Fort Hays timeout. UCO didn't look back on its way to a 25-16 third-set victory that put the Bronchos on the verge of winning the match.

There were eight ties and three lead changes in the fourth and final set, and, all of that came in the first half of the frame. Barry had a kill that put UCO in front, 11-10 and the Bronchos put it away after that. Central Oklahoma ended the match on a 15-7 run to take a 25-17 win and a 3-1 triumph over Fort Hays State.

Central Oklahoma now turns its attention to eighth-ranked Nebraska Kearney. The Bronchos will serve it up at 2 p.m. Saturday.

UCO is back home next week. Central hosts No. 2 Washburn on Thursday night at Hamilton Field House before facing Emporia State on Friday afternoon in Edmond.
