UCO Blanks No. 19 Minnesota State

JOPLIN, Mo. – Amaya Grace scored her first goal as a Broncho and that was enough to send Central Oklahoma to a win over No. 19-ranked Minnesota State Sunday afternoon.

UCO, now 2-0 on the young season, picked up its first shutout of 2022 with a suffocating defense that slowed the nationally ranked squad from Mankato, Minnesota.

"Today was a good team effort," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "They are a good team and played really well on Friday here, but our girls did a good job of working together to slow down their attack. We played well all around and it's good to get the win and build some confidence."

Central Oklahoma beat Oklahoma Christian 2-1 on Thursday night in Oklahoma City. The Bronchos then met Minnesota State in Joplin. MSU beat Missouri Southern 3-1 on Friday night.

Sunday afternoon, it was all Bronchos.

Grace scored the game-winning goal early, putting home a ball she received from Madison Linavong in the 22nd minute to give the Bronchos the lead. Grace and Eden Jones passed back and forth around 40 yards out before Grace sent it forward to Linavong, who just tapped it back leading Grace to open space. The give-and-go worked perfectly and Grace struck it straight left in the back of the net.

Grace kept that kind of pressure on Minnesota State all afternoon. She took a game-high five shots and put two shots on goal. MSU took eight shots as a team with six on goal.

Linavong, who also assisted on the game-winner Thursday at OC, took three shots on Sunday with two of those on target. Albany Adair also took two shots with one on goal.

The Bronchos took 15 shots in the game and put six on goal.

UCO's defense faced off against an MSU squad that took 26 shots on Friday night in Joplin and scored three goals. But the Bronchos wouldn't be bothered.

UCO held MSU to just four shots in each half Sunday.

Avery Bass played the full 90 minutes in goal for Central Oklahoma. She's played all 180 minutes to start the season. The true freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma made six saves Sunday. She opened her career with the Bronchos with 10 saves in two games – both UCO victories.

Central Oklahoma will now look to its 2022 home opener next. The Bronchos are scheduled to host East Central University at Tom Thompson Field Thursday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. UCO will then return to the road to face Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. That game will mark the 500th contest in school history for UCO soccer.
