UCO Tames Tigers In Home Opener

EDMOND (Sept. 1) – Madison Linavong tied a single-game school record with three assists and Central Oklahoma got goals from four different players in trimming East Central 4-2 Thursday night at rain-soaked Tom Thompson Field.

It was a successful home opener for the Bronchos, who broke a 2-2 tie with two scores nine minutes apart midway through the second half in improving to 3-0 on the young season.

"We played pretty well overall and came out with a good win," head coach Mike Cook said. "There were a few other scoring chances we could have converted and we had a couple of defense lapses, but I was pleased with our effort."

UCO never trailed after Kylee Wickersham headed in a shot 9:50 into the game off a pass from Linavong, but the Tigers tied it in the 40th minute and the teams were deadlocked 1-1 at halftime.

The Bronchos went back in front in the first three minutes of the second half when Amaya Grace took a pass from Linavong and found the back of the net from 10 yards out. ECU answered nine minutes later to pull even again.

UCO took the lead for good in the 70th minute, with Eden Jones scoring her first goal of the season off another feed from Linavong. It was the third assist of the game for Linavong, giving the sophomore midfielder a share of the single-game record shared by 12 other players.

Emily Tincher gave the Bronchos some breathing room nine minutes later when she knocked in a shot from long range to make it a two-goal game.

UCO outshot the Tigers 18-7 in the contest, including 9-4 in shots on goal.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday, traveling to Shawnee to take on Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m. for the 500th game in program history.
