Dobson, Lynch Send UCO Past Vikings

EDMOND (May 13) – Lexy Dobson broke out of a hitting slump in dramatic fashion to send Central Oklahoma into the finals of the NCAA Division II Central Regional II Tournament Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Dobson ended a 1-for-23 batting slide with a clutch two-out, three-run double in the top of the 11th inning that snapped a scoreless deadlock and the No. 8-ranked Bronchos went on to topple No. 9 Augustana 3-0.

Kylee Lynch was magnificent in the pitching circle for UCO, which moved to 47-10 in advancing to Saturday's 1 p.m. finals against either Augustana or Arkansas Tech. The Central Regional II champion advances to meet the Central Regional I winner in the best-of-three Central Super Regional Tournament next week.

Lynch kept the  potent Vikings in check throughout in notching her eighth shutout of the season. Augie entered the contest averaging a nation-leading 8.2 runs a game behind a .370 team batting average, but Lynch dominated.

The sophomore left-hander allowed just four hits while walking two and striking out six in a 155-pitch outing. Lynch gave up a leadoff infield single in the bottom of the 11th after Dobson's big hit, then got a groundout and two fly outs to close out the masterpiece in improving to 25-3.

"That was a big-time win for us," head coach Cody White said. "Augie has a great team and we haven't had much success against them, but the girls battled their butts off and got it done.

"I can't say enough about Kylee's performance. She was in the zone today and threw great from start to finish. And what a hit by Lexy. She's been struggling lately, but didn't get discouraged and came through when we needed it."

UCO ended a five-game losing streak to the Vikings, but it was anything but easy.

Both teams had scoring changes in the first few innings, but there was little offense after the fourth as Lynch and Augie's Amber Elliott took turns overwhelming batters.

The Bronchos finally broke through in the 11th and Jacee Minter got things started with a one-out double to right field. It was her 24th double of the season, tying the single-season school record set by JoBi Heath in 2019.

Amelya Huggins followed with a sharply-hit single up the middle to send Minter to third and Terin Ritz drew a two-out walk on a full-count pitch to load the bases for Dobson.

The senior center fielder – playing in a school career-record 242nd game -- laced a 1-0 pitch to the left-center field gap to clear the bases and send the UCO crowd into a frenzy. That made it 3-0, which was more than enough of a cushion with Lynch in the circle.
