Bronchos Drop Finale, Turn To Playoffs

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma came up short in its effort to sweep the season series against Emporia State Sunday afternoon, with the Bronchos fall 8-3 in the final game of the 2022 regular season.

UCO wrapped up the regular season 29-19 overall and 20-13 in conference play. The Bronchos will now look to the postseason, which begins Friday, May 6. Central Oklahoma will host Washburn in the 2022 MIAA Baseball Championship first round. UCO earned the No. 4 seed in the tournament and Washburn is the No. 5 seed.

The two will compete in a best-of-three series. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, May 6 at 6 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at 3 p.m., and Game 3, if necessary, is scheduled for Sunday, May 8 at 1 p.m.

The four advancing teams from the eight-team first round will all meet in Edmond for the remainder of the championship. A four-team, double-elimination tournament is scheduled for May 12-15 at Wendell Simmons Field. The winner of the 2022 MIAA Baseball Championship receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament later this month.

Sunday, Central didn't end the regular season on a high. The Bronchos fell behind 1-0 in the first and 2-0 in the second, but tied the game in the bottom of the second and took the lead 3-2 in the third inning. Unfortunately, UCO gave up a 3-2 lead late in the game and didn't recover.

Chase Lorg replaced starter Lawson Isaacs in the third inning and helped the Bronchos hold steady for several innings during the middle of the game. But a five-run rally in the seventh did UCO in. Lorg threw 4 1/3, striking out seven batters. But he gave up three runs on four hits and took the loss in the game.

Isaacs gave up two runs on two hits in two innings of work. He struck out three batters. Jacob Bailey threw 2/3 of an inning in relief of Lorg, Owen Logan threw one inning and Ethan Wayland also threw the ninth.

Bailey gave up two runs on one hit and one walk. Logan only allowed one hit. And Wayland gave up one final run on one hit and one walk.

Central Oklahoma had seven hits in the game on Sunday. Clayton Peterson and Seth Gray had two each.

Austin Lambert and Landen Wood recorded RBIs in the bottom of the second to help Central Oklahoma tie the game, 2-2. Lambert singled through the left side to score Noah Olson and Wood reached on a fielder's choice that scored Kaleb Glass after that.

In the bottom of the third, Peterson jacked a solo home run to left center field to give Central a 3-2 lead.

That would do it for the Broncho offense though on Sunday.

Peterson also doubled in the first inning but was later outed on a double play. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Gray went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

Noah Olson also went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Glass was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn will meet again next weekend in Edmond. The two met in Topeka, Kansas last month and UCO won two out of three against the Ichabods. Washburn won the first game on Friday, April 8, but Central responded with two wins to take the series. WU finished the 2022 regular season 29-17 overall and had a 19-13 record in league play.
