Central Oklahoma Crushes Southeastern Oklahoma State

EDMOND – It took a few minutes to get warmed up but when the Bronchos started to run there was no stopping UCO after that.

Central Oklahoma whipped Southeastern 17-7 in a non-conference matchup at Wendell Simmons Field Tuesday night. The Bronchos are now 20-13 on the season.

"Once we got going the guys got a lot more confidence and played well, they had good at bats," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It was good to to get a lot of guys in the game and get some opportunities. It's always good when you have a chance to do that."

Central Oklahoma used eight pitchers, along with the nine in the starting lineup, four pinch-hitters and one defensive substitution, 22 players got in the game Tuesday night.

Central Oklahoma trailed 3-0 after one inning of play and then 4-0 after two frames. Heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, it was still a four-run deficit for the Bronchos. But that's when it all changed.

UCO started the inning with four-straight doubles, hit a fifth double with two outs, and then had a pair of singles in the inning too. The offensive outburst totaled six runs and gave Central a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

UCO made it 7-0 in the fifth thanks to a solo homer by Kaleb Glass. Then UCO put five runs on the board in both the seventh and the eighth innings to reach the 17-run total.

Garrett Takamatsu went 4-for-5 with a solo home run of his own. He also hit two doubles and a single. He finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Noah Olson went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI.

Trevor Stevens and Glass both had two hits in the game. Glass went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and he finished with three runs and two RBIs. Stevens was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.

In the fourth, Takamatsu led off with a double down the left field line. Olson followed with an RBI double to left. Stevens followed that with an RBI double down the right field line. After a pitching change, Glass doubled down the right field line for another RBI.

Landen Wood doubled to left field and picked up two RBIs on the play, scoring Glass and Seth Gray, whose walk was the only non-double in six at bats for the Bronchos.

Clayton Peterson put one more on the board for the Bronchos with an RBI single to score Wood and give UCO a 6-4 lead.

Takamatsu's home run kickstarted the five-run seventh for UCO, giving the Bronchos an 8-5 lead. Gray made it 9-5 with and RBI single to right center that scored Olson. Stevens and Gray scored on a fielder's choice when the SOSU third baseman overthrew the catcher on a bases loaded ground ball. The two runs on the play made it 11-5. Jaden Parsons hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Dave Janssen and make it 12-5.

In the eighth, a two-RBI single to left by Janssen made it 14-7. A bases-loaded walk by Parsons scored Gray and it was 15-7. Then Kaden Marshall, pinch-hitting, was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded to make it 16-7.

Takamatsu drew a walk, bases still loaded, and that made it 17-7.

Owen Logan started the game for the Bronchos but only threw the first inning. He allowed three runs on three hits and a walk and had one strikeout.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace picked up the win for his efforts. He threw three innings out of the bullpen and allowed just one run on two hits. He did walk three but struck out two as well before leaving the game with Central up 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning.

Blake Bautz (2/3), Jase Farmer (1 1/3), Jacob Bailey (one), Brian Skillman (2/3) and Coby Grimsley (1/3) all came on relief before Chase Lorg finished the game in the top of the ninth.

Bautz struck out two batters in his appearance and Bailey and Lorg both struck out one. Lorg's K ended the game.

Central Oklahoma is going back on the road this weekend. The Bronchos visit Topeka, Kansas for a three-game MIAA series with Washburn.

UCO is 12-8 in conference play and sits in fifth place in the league standings. Washburn, 23-11 overall and 13-7 in the MIAA, is one game ahead of UCO and in third place in the standings.
