Central Oklahoma Drops Series Opener At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma opened its three-game MIAA series at Washburn Friday evening with a 7-3 setback. The Bronchos and the Ichabods return for Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m.

"They did a good job of limiting our opportunities today," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We've got to do a better job tomorrow of doing more when we have a chance to strike."

Central Oklahoma is 20-14 on the season following the loss and the Bronchos are now 12-9 in league play.

Lawson Isaacs took to the mound to start for UCO on Friday. He threw 5 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits. He struck out four batters.

Isaacs gave up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. A leadoff triple was followed by a sacrifice fly that made it 1-0. Washburn scored a pair of unearned runs later in the inning, including one on a two-error play.

Isaacs was solid in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. The hiccup in the second didn't seem too costly, but two homers in the sixth made it a 6-1 lead for Washburn.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace came on for Isaacs after the second homer. He gave up two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work, but with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, a balk by Ozorio-Brace scored Washburn's final run.

Chase Lorg pitched the bottom of the eighth inning and got three outs with just one walk issued.

Central Oklahoma scattered eight hits in the game Friday night. Clayton Peterson, Wyatt Gray, Seth Gray, and Landen Wood all had two hits apiece.

Peterson's first hit scored Wood in the top of the fifth inning. Wood singled earlier in the inning and moved up to second on a strange post-play throwing error by the Washburn pitcher.

Seth Gray tripled to leadoff the top of the ninth inning and Wood's second single of the day scored him on the next play.

Peterson's second single of the game scored Wood to make it 7-3.

Seth Gray's triple was the only extra base hit for the Bronchos on Friday. UCO drew five walks in addition to the eight hits and left 10 runners on base.
