Central Oklahoma Crushes ECU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma scored early in bunches and kept the pace up in a 17-7 run-rule blowout of East Central Tuesday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is now 27-18 heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The Bronchos are 18-12 in the MIAA and will play a three-game series against Emporia State to close out the 2022 campaign. That begins Friday at 6 p.m. in Edmond.

Tuesday, Central got a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, then put up six runs in the bottom half to set the tone for the night. East Central did answer back with five in the second, but it as 9-5 after two and the Bronchos kept scoring in each of the first five innings to rout the Tigers of Ada, Oklahoma.

"We would have liked to not give up so many runs in the early part of the game, but the offense did a great job of keeping the pressure on them," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We did a good job of being focused on taking care of business."

Central Oklahoma had 13 hits in the game, coming from eight different players. Austin Lambert led the way, going 3-for-4 with three doubles. He had three RBIs too and scored three runs of his own. Garrett Takamatsu went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. He had four RBIs in the game and scored twice. Seth Gray also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and one run scored. And Landen Wood joined the multi-hit night group, going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.

Owen Logan started for the Bronchos and threw 1 1/3 innings. He gave up four runs on two hits and two walks. Ethan Wayland threw 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run on one hit.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace threw two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out three batters, all in the third inning. And Chase Lorg finished the game, throwing three innings and not allowing a hit or a run. He did issue one walk, but struck out six in the game.

Central Oklahoma got its big lead early. Trevor Stevens drew a bases loaded walk that scored Jaden Parsons. Kaleb Glass drew a walk after that that scored Noah Olson. Lambert then doubled down the left field line to score Takamatsu and Stevens, and Gray singled through the left side to score Glass and Lambert and give Central Oklahoma a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Lambert put the Bronchos on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a double to right center that scored Stevens. Gray followed with another double to right field that scored Glass and Lambert to make it 9-5.

In the third, Takamatsu blasted his team-leading 17th home run of the season, also plating Olson on the shot deep to left center field. He gave Central an 11-5 lead.

In the fourth, Wood doubled to center to score Gray. Olson then drew a bases loaded walk that scored Dave Janssen, and Takamatsu followed that with a two-RBI single to center field that scored Wood and Parsons. He gave Central a 15-7 lead with that swing of the bat.

Janssen came back up in the fifth and scored Glass with a sacrifice fly to right field. Wood followed with a single to second base that scored Lambert and gave Central its final, 17-7.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game MIAA series against Emporia State. The Bronchos, at 18-12 in the MIAA, are playing for positioning in the MIAA Baseball Championship that begins next weekend. UCO can reach as high as No. 2 in the league standings and can fall no lower than sixth. The top four teams in the standings on May 1 will host a best-of-three playoff series May 6-8.

Central Oklahoma is also recognizing its 2022 Ring of Honor inductees on Saturday during Alumni Day and the Bronchos will recognize its 2022 senior class on Sunday before the first pitch.
