Bronchos Blast Emporia In Series Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened the final series of the regular season in a big way Friday night with the Bronchos blasting Emporia State 15-1 in an MIAA game at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 28-18 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 19-12 in league play. There are only two games remaining in the 2022 regular season. Central resumes its three-game series with Emporia State Saturday at 3 p.m. The final game of the year is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We battled early and just kept it going and the guys did a great job of that tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our offense found a way to fight tonight and the pitching staff did a great job of keeping them from doing much damage."

Emporia State scattered nine hits in the game but only managed the one run. ESU left eight on base and had two more runners picked off.

Lawson Isaacs got the start for UCO and went 3 1/3 innings. He allowed the one run in the top of the first and gave up six hits and one walk. But he also struck out three in the effort.

Jacob Bailey, who picked up the win for his efforts, threw 2 2/3 innings of relief work. He allowed three hits and two walks, but also struck out three and kept ESU off home plate during his outing.

Owen Logan threw the seventh inning and struck out the final two batters after issuing one walk.

Central Oklahoma scored early and often, including a huge eight-run fourth.

Garrett Takamatsu led the charge. He went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run. Takamatsu had four RBIs and scored four runs too.

Jaden Parsons, Noah Olson, Kaleb Glass and Seth Gray all had two-hit games.

Parsons went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Olson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Glass went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. And Gray went 2-for-4 with a solo home run that sparked the eight-run fourth.

Trevor Stevens also hit a double on Friday night and had one RBI. Landen Wood gave Central 14 hits in the game and he also scored a run.

Olson singled to left in the bottom of the first to score Takamatsu after his first double. That tied the game, 1-1.

Olson scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third inning on a wild pitch. Glass singled to right field to score Stevens later in the inning and gave Central a 3-1 lead with that RBI.

Gray led off the bottom of the fourth by blasting an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field to make it 4-1. He opened the flood gates with the shot.

Wood scored on a wild pitch, Takamatsu scored Parsons and Clayton Peterson with a two-RBI double down the left field line, chasing the ESU starter and giving Central Oklahoma a 7-1 lead. Takamatsu scored from third on a wild pitch soon after and Stevens scored Olson with an RBI double down the right field line.

Glass laid down a bunt single after that and Stevens advanced to third on the play, then scored after an ESU throwing error.

Gray, back up for the second time in the inning, then belted an RBI single to left center that scored Glass and gave the Bronchos an 11-1 lead.

Olson added to it in the fifth with an RBI single to left that scored Takamatsu after his third double. And Glass followed with a sacrifice fly to score Olson and give UCO a 13-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with Parsons on a bag, Takamatsu then blasted a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left field and make it the final, 15-1.

Central Oklahoma had 14 hits in the game to reach 15 runs. The Bronchos recorded extra bases in half of those hits.

Central Oklahoma will continue its MIAA series with the Emporia State on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Bronchos are hosting Alumni Day with a special recognition preceding the game for UCO's latest Ring of Honor inductees.

Central will then wrap up the regular season on Sunday with Senior Day.

The 2022 MIAA Baseball Championship begins Friday, May 6. UCO is in line to host a first-round best-of-three series at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos are in fourth-place in the league standings with two games left and need one win, or one Washburn loss, in the final two games to clinch the home series next weekend.
