UCO Sweeps Past RiverHawks

EDMOND (April 15) – Four home runs and nine shutout innings from pitching ace Kylee Lynch helped Central Oklahoma deliver a welcome birthday present to head coach Cody White Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos swept Northeastern State, taking the opener 6-0 behind Lynch's complete-game five-hitter before rallying for an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap as Lynch closed out the game with two perfect innings of relief work.

UCO improved to 36-6 on the season and 15-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play in stretching its winning streak to nine. The Bronchos are back home Saturday at noon for a huge league showdown against No. 2 Rogers State in the final home games of the regular season.

"Those were two big wins for us," said White, who celebrating his 37th birthday with the 336th and 337th wins of his nine-year UCO career. "NSU is a tough team with a couple of good pitchers, but we found a way to get it done today. We came up with some really key hits and Kylee had another good day for us."

Lynch indeed had another strong outing in the circle in notching her 16th complete-game of the season in the opener before closing out the second game.

The sophomore left-hander scattered five hits and gave up one walk while striking two in the first game, then retired all six batters she faced in the nightcap. Lynch, now 18-1 on the season, has thrown 24 straight shutout innings over a five-game stretch.

UCO scored the only runs it would need in the bottom of the first of the opener with one swing of the bat. Tarin Dubler drew a two-out walk and Jacee Minter followed with her eighth home run of the season, parking the first pitch she saw over the center field wall.

It stayed 2-0 until the sixth when the Bronchos pulled away with a four-run outburst.

Lexy Dobson got the inning going with a one-out single through the left side and raced around to score on Shayleigh Odom's double down the left field line. Mikalya Rutland followed with her fifth homer of the year, this one a line-drive shot to center field.

Shayla Harper was hit by pitch to keep the inning going, then stole second and went to third on a groundout before scoring on Dubler's single to left field to make it 6-0.

Minter had two of Central's eight hits, with six other players collecting one each.

The RiverHawks broke a scoreless tie in the second game with three runs in the top of the fourth only to see UCO answer with five of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Minter led off the inning with a no-doubt solo blast to center field and the Bronchos soon loaded the bases for Harper. The junior slugger quickly emptied them, mashing a long drive to right-center field for her second grand slam in a week.

NSU hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth to get within 5-4, but again the Bronchos responded. This time it was a three-run volley to put the game away.

Korbyn Skipworth came through with a two-out RBI single, went to third on Dobson's base hit and scored on a wild pitch before Odom drove a run-scoring single through the right side to make it 8-4.

Lynch came on to pitch in the top of the sixth and the RiverHawks had no answer for her in the final two innings.

UCO finished with nine hits, getting two apiece from Harper and Dubler.
