Central Opens Newman Series With Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma had two big offensive rallies and played solid on defense throughout an 11-1 run-rule victory against Newman Friday night in an MIAA contest at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 16-10 overall with the win and are now 9-5 in MIAA play. Friday was the first of three MIAA contests with Newman this weekend. UCO is scheduled to play Game 2 Saturday at 3 p.m. and Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We played really well early and that gave our guys a lot of confidence to keep it up," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Pitching was good, defense was really good, and we battled for it at the plate. They're a good team and they're going to respond tomorrow so we have to be ready."

Lawson Isaacs, who threw a perfect game on Sunday and was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, go the start and he wasn't done with his dominant performance.

Isaacs threw 5 1/3 no-hit innings on Friday in Edmond, running his total to 12 1/3 no-hit innings in his last two outings. He did hit a batter early Friday and walked two more, but he finished a solid start after 5 2/3 innings of work. Isaacs gave up one run, one hit, and two walks.

Jacob Bailey relieved Isaacs in the sixth and finished the game. He threw 2 1/3, allowed just one hit and no runs while walking only one batter.

Isaacs struck out six in the start and Bailey followed with four more Ks to give Central double-digit strikeouts.

Noah Olson went 3-for-4 and Landen Wood went 2-for-4 on Friday night. Both had two RBIs.

Wood had a two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth that ended the game early, giving Central a 10-run lead for the run-rule.

Olson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. He led off the inning with a single and stole second shortly after. He moved to third on a groundout before scoring when Zac Freeman reached on a fielding error by the Newman second baseman.

Central poured it on in the third inning, putting up a five-spot to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Wood led off with a double down the left field line, then moved to third on a sacrifice-bunt by Jaden Parsons. Clayton Peterson walked, then stole second, then Garrett Takamatsu walked to load the bases.

Olson singled up the middle to collect his two RBIs in the game, scoring Wood and Peterson on the play. Kaleb Glass followed that with a triple down the right field line to score Takamatsu and Olson and give Central a 5-0 lead. Wyatt Gray's RBI groundout scored Glass and made it 6-0.

Central's offense cooled in the middle of the ballgame. Austin Lambert scored one more in the bottom of the seventh on a delayed steal attempt by Parsons. Lambert crossed home plate just before Parsons was out in a run down between first and second.

Up 7-1 heading to the eighth, Central took advantage of a pitching change.

Olson led off with a double and scored when Glass reached on a fielder's choice. An errant throw by the Newman pitcher allowed Olson to score from second on the play and make it 8-1.

After Gray was hit by a pitch, another Newman pitching change followed.

Freeman also drew a walk to load the bases, then Lambert hit a high chopper back to the pitcher that scored Glass to make it 9-1.

Wood followed with a 0-2 single up the middle to score Gray and Freeman and end the game early for the Bronchos.
