Bronchos Bash Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Central Oklahoma had both its offense and defense put on brilliant performances Wednesday afternoon in a 15-1 whipping during a non-conference clash with longtime rival Southwestern Oklahoma State.

UCO is 15-10 on the season following the win. The Bronchos are scheduled to return home for a three-game MIAA series against Newman beginning Friday night.

"We did a good job being aggressive at the plate and focusing on doing a job," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys went out there and got after it and the pitching staff did a really good job of shutting them down."

Central Oklahoma scored early and scored often on Wednesday.

The Bronchos scored once in the first and second innings before posting four runs in the top of the third. After scoring one again in the fourth, Central Oklahoma put up a five-spot in the top of the fifth. UCO added one more in the sixth and two in the seventh to reach 15 runs.

Central used five pitchers on the afternoon to get through the game. Owen Logan, Chase Lorg and A.J. Ozorio-Brace each threw two innings and each had one strikeout on the day.

Logan issued one walk but didn't give up a hit in his two innings. Lorg didn't walk any batters but gave up two hits. And Brace walked one and allowed two hits.

Brian Skillman started off the seventh. He got two quick outs, including one strikeout, before walking the bases loaded. Jase Farmer then came on in relief. A wild pitch allowed Southwestern's only run to score. Farmer did walk another batter to load the bases again before getting a fielder's choice groundout to end the game.

Central Oklahoma got started early. Jaden Parsons singled to left field on the game's first at bat. He moved up to second on a wild pitch and to third on a bunt single by Clayton Peterson. Garrett Takamatsu reached on a fielder's choice that scored Parsons and gave Central a 1-0 lead.

Wyatt Gray reached on an error by the SWOSU shortstop with one out in the second. He scored on Austin Lambert's two-out double to give Central a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Gray was at it again in the third. Parsons led off the inning with a walk before Peterson doubled to left field. After a pair of groundouts that held the runners, Kaleb Glass drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Gray. He saw one he liked and drove a deep ball out to right field for a grand slam that put Central Oklahoma up 6-0 after three innings of play.

In the fourth, Lambert led off with a walk and advanced to second when Landen Wood was hit by a pitch. Both of those two moved up a bag when Parsons reached on a SWOSU throwing error, then Peterson lined out to second but picked up an RBI when Lambert made it home safely on the play to give Central a 7-0 lead.

UCO took a commanding lead and made it a blowout in the fifth.

Glass doubled down the right field line to score Takamatsu and Gray singled up the middle to score Glass. That made it 9-0. Wood was hit by a pitch again but this time with the bases loaded and Gray scored on the play to make it 10-0.

Parsons followed with a bases loaded walk that scored Zac Freeman and made it 11-0. Finally, a sacrifice fly from Peterson out to center field scored Lambert and Central Oklahoma led 12-0.

Gray continued his offensive onslaught in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to right field that made it 13-0.

Central finally landed on its final 15 runs with a pair in the top of the seventh. Olson doubled to right to score Parsons and Trevor Stevens, giving the Bronchos a 15-0 lead in the game.

Southwestern got one back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but the run-rule was still plenty for the Bronchos.

Gray finished the day 3-for-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored.

Parsons, Peterson, and Olson all had two hits in the game. Olson, Peterson, Glass and Lambert each had doubles to go with Gray's two homers that gave Central six extra-base hits.

Central Oklahoma, now 15-10 overall, returns to league play this weekend against Newman. The Bronchos are 8-5 in MIAA competition.
