PERFECT! Lawson Isaacs Delivers Bronchos A Perfect Game

Central Oklahoma Swept Fort Hays State With A 12-0 Run-Rule Sunday

HAYS, Kan. – Lawson Isaacs wasn't expecting to throw a complete game Sunday. No one does anymore. That's the way the game is these days.

Even with Central Oklahoma ending it early, 12-0 via the run rule, complete games just don't happen much anymore. Isaacs did though on Sunday and he didn't just earn a complete game.

The final line: seven innings, no hits, no runs, no walks, and five strikeouts. A perfect game.

"It feels really good to get the series sweep," Isaacs said, quickly deflecting the attention. "We really needed it as a team."

"That's really special and we are all really thrilled for Lawson," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "These are things you'll never forget. It was good to get a win today and to win the series and get a sweep. I think we're getting a little better every day and we need to keep that up. But just a real special moment for Lawson and I'm happy for him."

Isaacs threw just the fourth no-hitter on record at Central Oklahoma and the first since 2006. It's the first perfect game by a Broncho.

He recorded all 21 outs in the game consecutively, getting Fort Hays to hit into 11 flyouts and five groundouts in addition to his five strikeouts. He fanned four of those five swinging and caught one Tiger batsman looking in the game.

"We planned on going a couple of innings today," Isaacs said. "But my pitch count was low so just kept going and trying to attack the hitters early. In between innings, I did what I usually do out of the bullpen, which is just have some water and sit on the bench and watch the game."

Isaacs has been with Central Oklahoma since 2020. He made three appearances that Spring before the season was abruptly canceled. In 20 appearances during the 2021 season and through 14 appearances so far in 2022, Isaacs had never thrown more than three innings in one game.

Sunday was also just his fifth start in 37 career appearances. He has made nine appearances, including Sunday, without allowing a hit. His previous best was 1 2/3 innings pitched without a hit. He also has seven of those nine appearances where he didn't issue a walk either.

Central's offense was almost just as good Sunday.

The Bronchos scored one in the top of the second before bursting open the game with a six-run third inning. UCO added another run in the fifth and then two more in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Every Broncho batter to step to the plate got a hit on Sunday.

Jaden Parsons (2-for-3), Clayton Peterson (2-for-5), and Zac Freeman (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games while six other Bronchos had one hit.

Central Oklahoma got it started in the top of the second inning. Noah Olson doubled to right center to lead off the inning, then moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kaleb Glass. Freeman's two-out single scored Olson and made it 1-0.

Seth Gray led off the top of the third reaching on a fielding error by the Fort Hays State shortstop before four consecutive singles followed for Central.

Landen Wood singled on a bunt to the pitcher, Parsons singled on a bunt down the third base line, then Peterson singled to right. The latter scored Gray and made it 2-0.

Garrett Takamatsu then knocked a single to right center to score Wood, 3-0. Olson then hit a sac-fly to right field that scored Parsons, 4-0.

An RBI groundout by Glass scored Peterson and a Wyatt Gray single to left scored Takamatsu. Freeman scored Wyatt  Gray with a single to right field that made it 7-0.

Glass scored Takamatsu with a single through the right side in the top of the fifth, 8-0.

Peterson scored Parsons and Wood with a two-RBI triple to right center in the top of the sixth inning, 10-0.

Seth Gray scored Glass with a single in the seventh and Parsons drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Freeman to make it the final, 12-0.

Central Oklahoma improved to 14-10 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 8-5 in the MIAA.

UCO is scheduled to play two non-conference games during the week this week. The Bronchos will visit Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday before hosting the Bulldogs on Wednesday. The Bronchos beat SWOSU in Edmond in February and had its second home game against the longtime rival postponed due to weather.

Central Oklahoma will then return to MIAA play next weekend. The Bronchos are scheduled to welcome Newman to Edmond for a three-game series beginning Friday at Wendell Simmons Field.
