UCO Tripped at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. – The UCO baseball team dropped a non-conference road game Wednesday, falling 10-3 to Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The Bronchos are 7-5 on the season following the setback. UCO will be back on the field this weekend at home. Central is scheduled to host Rogers State in a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday at 5 p.m.

"They got after us today and we struggled to respond," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We needed to do a better job at the plate today and not put so much pressure on our staff. We're still trying to get better so we'll learn from this one and move on."

Central Oklahoma managed just four hits at the plate Wednesday. Jose Luna went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. He also scored a run. Clayton Peterson went 1-for-2 with three walks. He had an RBI too to score Luna. Austin Lambert went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Alex Austin reached on an error with one out before Luna's triple to center field. Peterson singled to left with two outs in the inning to score Luna and tie the game, 2-2.

SOSU went back in front 5-2 in the bottom half and UCO got one back in the top of the fifth. Shane Nixon led off with a walk and advanced to second later on a wild pitch. He moved to third on Lambert's bunt single, then scored on a Trevor Stevens groundout to make it 5-3.

Unfortunately for Central on Wednesday, the Bronchos couldn't get any more offense going. And Southeastern did. SOSU scored four more in the bottom of the fifth to go in front 9-3, then added one more in the eighth to make it the final, 10-3.

Central used eight pitchers, with no one throwing more than two innings. Seven of the eight gave up a hit and Southeastern scored runs off five of them.

Coby Grimsley got the start and threw 1 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits and three walks. Lawson Isaacs, charged for the loss on Wednesday, threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits and one walk. Both Grimsley and Isaacs struck out three batters.

Blake Bautz faced one batter and he hit him. A.J. Ozorio-Brace threw 1 1/3 and allowed two runs on one hit and a walk. Ethan Wayland also made an appearance but didn't record an out. He allowed two runs one hit and a walk.

Brian Skillman walked a batter and gave up one hit in 1/3 of an inning of work. Owen Logan threw 2.0 innings and did not give up a run either. Tanner Lawrence threw the bottom of the eighth and allowed one run on one hit and one walk. Logan and Lawrence both struck out one batter.

Rogers State is 6-8 this season with a 1-2 record in league play. The Hillcats of Claremore, Oklahoma lost the series at home against Newman last weekend. RSU is coming off a home win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in a midweek non-conference clash Tuesday.

Central Oklahoma, 7-5 overall, is 2-1 in MIAA play. The Bronchos went on the road last weekend and took the series at Missouri Western.

Friday's game is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Bronchos have a 3 p.m. start lined up for Saturday and a 1 p.m. start to finish the series scheduled for Sunday.
