Central Falls Again To Wrap Up Southern Series

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team had a solid offensive outing in the third contest of a three-game homestand with Missouri Southern, but the Broncho defense faltered Monday and left UCO in the loss column again after an eight-inning run-rule.

Missouri Southern 18, Central Oklahoma 7.

After having managed just three hits Saturday and only one Sunday, the Bronchos bats came alive for a dozen hits on Monday afternoon. UCO scored in four of eight innings, including in three straight in the middle of the game.

Unfortunately, Central got in a 5-0 deficit early and the offense couldn't recover. Missouri Southern scored one in the second, four in the third, three more in the fourth and put up a five-spot in the fifth, going ahead 13-4 after that inning.

The Lions added two in the seventh to get enough for the run-rule before the Bronchos answered back with a enough to keep the game going. Then Southern posted three more in the eighth to get back in front by enough to call it early after Central's third out in bottom of the eighth.

Chase Lorg got the start for Central Monday. The right-handed hurler threw three innings and struck out five in the outing, but he allowed eight runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks. Lawson Isaacs threw one inning out of the bullpen and allowed five more runs (three earned) on four hits.

Brian Skillman followed Isaacs and was solid, only allowing one hit and no runs over a two-inning appearance. The lefty struck out two Southern batters on the day.

Tanner Lawrence followed Skillman and he gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in 1/3 of inning. Blake Bautz threw one inning and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk. Owen Logan finished the game for the Bronchos, allowing just one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Bautz and Logan both struck out one batter each to give UCO nine Ks on the afternoon.

All nine Broncho starters in the field recorded at least one hit Monday, with a trio of Central sluggers getting two base knocks.

Jaden Parsons went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Austin Lambert went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. And Zac Freeman went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Clatyon Peterson (1-for-5), Garrett Takamatsu (1-for-3), Noah Olson (1-for-4), Kaleb Glass (1-for-3), Alex Austin (1-for-4) and Wyatt Gray (1-for-2) all had a hit.

Peterson, Glass, Austin and Gray all had doubles.

Parsons scored Freeman in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout to short. Takamatsu got his single after that to score Peterson. The latter cut it to 5-2 after three innings.

Gray doubled in the bottom of the fourth to score Austin and make it 8-3.

Olson singled up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to score Peterson. That made it 13-4.

Lambert singled to left field in the bottom of the seventh to score Parsons. And Glass doubled after that to score Olson and Lambert. After trailing 15-4, Central was in jeopardy of being run-ruled in seven innings before that three-run outburst prolonged the inevitable.

Central Oklahoma moved its three-game MIAA series with Missouri Southern back one day due to snow last Friday. The Bronchos then found five games in five days on their scheduled. UCO will host Northeastern State in an MIAA contest Tuesday at 5 p.m. before crossing the OKC metro Wednesday to take on Southern Nazarene at 1 p.m.

UCO will make a trip to Hays, Kansas this weekend for a three-game MIAA series with Fort Hays State that is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon.
