Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 13 UCO Falls To Griffons

EDMOND (Feb. 8) – A big early lead turned into a double-digit second-half deficit that proved too much for Central Oklahoma to overcome Tuesday afternoon at Hamilton Field House as the No. 13-ranked Bronchos dropping a stunning 71-68 decision to Missouri Western.

UCO charged out to a 21-7 lead just seven minutes into the contest only to see the Griffons rally and go up by 10 (56-46) midway through the second half. The Bronchos came back, but missed two tying 3-point tries in the final four seconds in suffering the upset.

It was the first home loss of the season for Central, which fell to 19-4 on the season and 14-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. The Griffons improved to 10-12 and 6-8. The game was originally scheduled to be played Jan. 22, but was rescheduled due to health and safety reasons.

"We just got beat today," head coach Bob Hoffman said. "It happens in basketball and we just have to get a little tougher. We'll regroup, put this game behind us and get ready for Saturday."

The Bronchos return to action Saturday, traveling to Wichita, Kan. for a 3:30 p.m. contest against Newman.

Camryn Givens scored seven points and Jaden Wells hit two corner 3-pointers in the first seven minutes as UCO zipped to its quick 21-7 lead in apparently taking quick control of the game, but MWSU responded.

The Griffons scored eight unanswered points to get back in the game and ended up taking a 36-35 halftime lead after making two free throws with 10 seconds left.

The Bronchos went up 40-39 early in the second half after Isaiah Wade converted a three-point play before a bevy of turnovers and missed shots helped MWSU surge in front 56-46 with 10:05 remaining.

UCO answered with a 12-1 run, regaining the lead at 58-57 with 5:26 left on two Carson Calavan free throws and it was back-and-forth the rest of the way.

Wade's layoff off a nifty Callen Haydon feed had the Bronchos within one at 67-66 at the 1:18 mark, but the Griffons scored four straight points to make it 71-66 with 40 seconds left.

Calavan's driving layup at 0:22 made it 71-68 and Wade rebounded a missed MWSU free throw at 0:15 to give UCO a chance.

A scramble for a loose ball at the top of the key left Wade with a wide-open 3-pointer and the senior standout's shot went in-and-out of the basket with four seconds left. Calavan tracked down the rebound, but his desperation heave at the buzzer went off the front rim.

Haydon and Givens finished with 16 points apiece to lead the Bronchos, while Wade added 14 and Wells 10. Givens and Wade had eight rebounds apiece and Haydon dished out five assists.
