No. 13 UCO Reaches Cruising Altitude In Win Over Jets

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 13 Central Oklahoma got back in the win column Saturday afternoon and did so in convincing fashion, beating Newman 83-61.

Central Oklahoma improved to 20-4 with the win and the Bronchos are now 15-3 in the MIAA.

"The guys did a good job of sticking to our gameplan and working to make sure everyone got involved," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "When you can get everyone going it just opens it all up. We're our best when we do that."

Central Oklahoma picked up its 20th win of the season. This marks the 24th time in school history the Bronchos have reached that milestone and the first time Hoffman (third season) has. The last time the Bronchos won 20 games was 2017-18 when Central finished the season 20-10.

UCO didn't struggle on Saturday. The Bronchos got a stop on the defensive end to start the game and Callen Haydon scored a layup 30 seconds into the contest to put the Bronchos ahead 2-0. Central never trailed.

UCO got another stop before Isaiah Wade made a layup. UCO got another stop and then Camryn Givens knocked down a turnaround jumper. It was 6-0, Central, less than two minutes into the action.

Wade led Central Oklahoma with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 70 percent from the floor, making 7 of 10 attempts. He hit 1 of 2 3-pointers and 3 of 4 free-throws. Haydon had 12 points and 13 assists, a mark that is tied for the fifth-most in one game in school history. And Givens scored 12 points and had four rebounds.

Jaden Wells also scored 15 points, hitting 5 of 8 shots. He knocked down three 3-pointers and a pair of free-throws. Jalyn Turner scored a dozen as well to put all five starters for Central Oklahoma in double digits. The Broncho starting five outscored Newman 69-61 in the game.

After the 6-0 start, Newman got on the board with a 3-pointer, but Central went on a 7-0 run after that to take a 13-3 lead. UCO led 13-3 with just over 16 minutes to go in the first half. The Bronchos led 26-8 with 10 minutes still to play in the first half.

Central led by 19 points when Wade made a layup with seven minutes left in the first half, and again when Wells hit a 3-pointer with one minute to play till halftime. That was the biggest lead of the game for the Bronchos.

UCO led 43-25 at halftime.

Central's biggest lead of the game came just after the midway point of the second half. UCO outscored Newman 25-13 through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Then after Givens converted an and-1 with 9:38 to play, No. 33 extended the lead to 33 points, 71-68.

UCO outscored Newman 40-36 in the second half to reach the final, 83-61.

Central got 14 bench points on Saturday. Davon Richardson and Conner Calavan both scored four points and Austin Fenton, Seth Hurd, and Danquez Dawsey all scored two.

The Bronchos finished the game shooting 31 of 52 from the floor, a 59.6 percent rate that stands as the second-best performance for the Bronze & Blue this season (Central shot 60.4 percent in a win over Emporia State in December). UCO hit 9 of 18 shots from behind the 3-point line for an even 50 percent and the Bronchos converted 12 of 16 free-throw attempts for a 75 percent mark.

Central Oklahoma has two more road games left on a three-game swing. The Bronchos are scheduled to face Rogers State on Wednesday in Claremore before visiting Northeastern State next Saturday in Tahlequah.

UCO will close the 2021-22 regular season the following weekend at home. The Bronchos host Central Missouri on Feb. 23 before welcoming Missouri Southern to Hamilton Field House for the season finale on Feb. 26.
