No. 16 Central Oklahoma Picks Up Big MIAA Win

EDMOND – No. 16 Central Oklahoma earned a crucial MIAA victory on Saturday against Fort Hays State with the Bronchos winning 75-68 at Hamilton Field House.

UCO is now 19-3 on the season and has a 14-2 record in the MIAA. Fort Hays dropped to 16-4 overall and 11-4 in the league. The Bronchos held firm its position in second place in the conference standings with the win and kept the charging Fort Hays squad in third place.

"We had some guys really step up today and we had to work for this one, Fort Hays State is a really good team," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "We got on them early but we knew they were going to rally. Then they did and our guys answered right back. These kinds of wins go along way. I'm really proud of the guys today."

Central Oklahoma led by as many as 16 points midway through the first half but only by four at halftime. Fort Hays State took its first lead of the game with a 5-0 run to start the second half and there ended up being six lead changes and four ties by the end of the game.

Fort Hays took a 63-61 lead with 5:52 to play in the game. Callen Haydon tied the game for the last time with two free-throws on the next possession. That started a quick 6-0 run that turned the tide.

Isaiah Wade knocked down a jumper and Haydon made a layup to make it 67-63 with 3:57 to play. Hays answered with a 3-pointer to stall that run and get it back to one, 67-66. Wade scored the next four to make it 71-66, then Jaden Wells sank a floater in the lane after a Hays basket to make it 73-68 with just 33 seconds left in the game.

The Bronchos got a big stop and Fort Hays State had to foul. Haydon sank a pair of free-throws to finish off the win and settle on the final score, 75-68.

Haydon led Central Oklahoma with 19 points and five assists on Saturday. He was 6-for-14 from the floor and only 1-for-4 from behind the 3-point line, but he also went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Haydon also had two boards and a steal.

Wade also had a big game, posting 17 points on 8 of 14 shooting. He was 1-for-4 from behind the arc and didn't take any free-throws in the game. Wade also had eight rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

Camryn Givens scored 13 for the Bronchos. He went 4-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. He also had two boards and one steal.

Preston Aymond scored eight points off the bench and Carson Calavan had five. Wells finished with six points, going 3-for-7 from the floor.

Jalyn Turner scored seven points and had six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.

UCO got all over FHSU early on Saturday. The Bronchos had a 14-4 lead after Givens made two free-throws out of the first media timeout of the game with 14:35 to go in the first half.

Central had a 6-0 run midway through the half that ballooned the lead to 16 points, 30-14, with 8:25 to play.

But Hays outscored UCO 24-12 in the final eight minutes of the first half to cut the deficit back to four points, 42-38, at the half.

Central Oklahoma finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the floor, making 28 of 55 shots in the game. The Bronchos were only 4-for-17 on 3-point attempts, a 23.5 percent mark, but UCO did go 15-for-18 from the free-throw line.

UCO swept the season series against Fort Hays with Saturday's win. The Bronchos beat the Tigers 77-60 in Hays, Kansas back in December. Fort Hays State, allowing an MIAA best 58.6 points per game this season, gave up an average of 76 points per game against the Bronchos this season, nearly 20 points above average.

Central Oklahoma has one game left on a three-game homestand. The Bronchos welcome Missouri Western to Hamilton Field House on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m. The MIAA contest is a makeup game after MWSU had to pause operations in January and could not make the originally scheduled trip.

UCO is scheduled to play Newman next Saturday in Wichita, Kansas before traveling to face off against Rogers State and Northeastern State in two weeks. The Bronchos close out the 2021-22 regular season the last week of February with home games against Central Missouri and Missouri Southern.

The 2022 MIAA Championships are scheduled for the first week of March and this season, the postseason tournament will return to historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The top 10 teams in the MIAA make the tournament with the top two squads getting a first-round bye, making Saturday's win over Fort Hays State that much more important for the Bronchos.
