EDMOND – No. 16 Central Oklahoma beat Nebraska Kearney 85-69 Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 18-3 overall with the win and UCO is now 13-2 in the MIAA.

"We did a good job defending today," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "Callen (Haydon) was great today and when he plays good we all play good. That was a big help."

Callen Haydon led Central with 27 points and six assists. He also had three steals. Haydon was 10-for-15 from the floor, hit one 3-pointer, and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. The 27 for Haydon tied a season-high. He's done it three times this season and twice against Nebraska-Kearney.

Preston Aymond added 14 points off the bench in 22 minutes of play. He was 4-for-8 and hit two 3-pointers and he also had four assists and three rebounds. Davon Richardson scored 10 off the bench giving UCO big boost from the second unit. He went 4-for-6 and also hit two 3-pointers.

Central Oklahoma got off to a slow start. The Bronchos only made one field goal in the first three minutes and 49 seconds. But UCO soon had it under control and the Bronchos blew past Kearney by the middle of the first half.

UCO shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, making 14 of 26 shots, including five 3-pointers. The Bronchos were also 9 of 12 from the free-throw line in the first half.

Central pulled ahead in part thanks to an 8-0 run midway through the half. Richardson hit a 3-pointer with 7:53 to play and Haydon followed with a 3-pointer of his own with 7:13 to play. Haydon also made a pair of free-throws with 6:44 to go in the half. That made it 26-14, UCO, and the Bronchos didn't look back before taking a 42-28 lead at the break.

UCO cruised in the second half, outscoring UNK 43-41 to settle on another double-digit win, 85-69. The Bronchos shot 56.4 percent in the game, hitting 31 of 55 total shots. UCO was 8-for-22 from behind the 3-point line and 15-for-19 from the free-throw line in the game.
