Bronchos Whip Griffons To Take Series

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The UCO baseball team won its MIAA series against Missouri Western following a 14-2 run-rule victory on Monday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma, now 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in the MIAA, won 2-0 on Saturday before a 7-4 setback on Sunday. The Broncho bats came alive Monday in the series finale to get the victory.

"We were solid at the plate today and that was big for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We keep improving a little at a time and that's a good thing. We got solid pitching today too. The goal is to win every series and we got the first one."

Central Oklahoma had 14 runs on 14 hits Monday. Eight of nine starters had one hit, five Bronchos had multiple hits, and Landen Wood led UCO with three hits.

Wood went 3-for-5 with five RBIs. He led off the game with a single in the top of the first inning. He had a two-RBI double in the fourth. And then hit two-RBI inside the park home run in the seventh.

Clayton Peterson went 2-for-4 and had three RBIs. He had a two-RBI single in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth.

Tucker Elliott got the start for the Bronchos Monday. The right-hander was solid, striking out eight batters in six innings of work. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. Five of his eight Ks were looking.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace pitched the bottom of the seventh and struck out all three batters to get UCO the win.

Central got on the board first Monday. Noah Olson singled to right field to leadoff the top of the second inning. After Austin Lambert walked, Kaleb Glass laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out.

Trevor Stevens then grounded out to first but did a job in scoring Olson and giving Central a 1-0 lead.

Missouri Western got its two runs in the bottom of the third but then UCO exploded in the top of the fourth to break the game wide open. And all of it happened with two outs.

Lambert singled, Glass singled, and Stevens singled. The latter scored Lambert and tied the game, 2-2. Dave Janssen was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to load the bases before Wood smacked his two-RBI double to left field that scored Glass and Stevens and put UCO up 4-2.

Peterson singled after Wood and scored Janssen and Wood to give UCO a 6-2 lead. Then Garrett Takamatsu smashed a two-run home run to left center and Shane Nixon, who led off the inning with a groundout to third, cranked a solo shot to left to give the Bronchos a 9-2 lead. Olson, who grounded out after Nixon the first time around, also hit a solo home run and Central was up 10-2.

In the top of the fifth, Central kept it going.

Glass led off with a single before Stevens walked. After an MWSU pitching change, Janssen also drew a walk. Wood earned another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Glass and giving UCO an 11-2 lead. Peterson's RBI single to left scored Stevens to make it 12-2.

Stevens led off the seventh inning with a single and Wood's inside the park two-run home run followed to give UCO its 14-2 lead.

Olson, Glass and Stevens all had two hits in the game to join Peterson. Takamatsu, Nixon and Lambert each had one hit. Central Oklahoma sent 10 batters to the plate on Monday and only had one strikeout all afternoon.

UCO will return home before a day-trip Wednesday to Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Bronchos visit SOSU Wednesday at 2 p.m. and then will pick back up in MIAA play this weekend. UCO is scheduled to host Rogers State for a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
