UCO One-Hits Western To Open MIAA Play With Win

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The UCO baseball team opened MIAA play Saturday with a 2-0 win over Missouri Western.

Three Broncho pitchers no-hit the Griffons for 8 2/3 innings before a two-out single in the ninth broke it up. But UCO didn't falter after that and picked up the win.

Central Oklahoma is 6-3 on the young season and now 1-0 in the MIAA.

"That would have really cool for the guys to get the no-hitter," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "But we all know how hard that is to do and we got the win so that's what matters. We need to come back tomorrow and see if we can't do a little more on offense and hopefully keep that pitching up."

Jacob Bailey got the start for the Bronchos and the senior right-handed pitcher was brilliant. He threw seven no-hit innings, striking out eight along the way. Bailey did walk three batters and hit another, but showed no signs of shortage as he retired near every Griffon that stepped to the plate.

Lawson Isaacs came on to pitch the eight inning and got a three-up, three-down with three fly balls to keep UCO's no-hit bid going.

Central scored its two runs in the top of the ninth and Kyler Patterson came on to finish the job. He got a fly ball for the first out, a ground ball for the second, but then a single to center broke up the no-hitter. Patterson did walk the next batter but got a groundout to third base to end the game.

It would have been Central's first no-hitter since 2006. It is the first one-hitter since 2019.

UCO did scatter seven hits on Saturday. But the last one was the best one.

Entering the ninth in a scoreless tie, Kaleb Glass and Alex Austin both struck out to start the inning. But a rally ensued.

Shane Nixon singled through the left side, then stole second before Seth Gray drew a walk. Then Dave Janssen reached on an error by the MWSU third baseman to load the bases for Clayton Peterson with two outs.

Peterson delivered. He slapped a two-RBI single to score Nixon and Gray and give UCO the 2-0 lead it needed.

Peterson went 2-for-3 Saturday with two RBIs and a pair of walks. Garrett Takamatsu, Austin Lambert, Glass, Austin and Nixon all had hits as well for the Bronchos. All seven hits for Central were singles.

The teams are scheduled to play Game 2 of the three-game series Sunday afternoon.
