No. 18 Central Oklahoma Tops NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – No. 18 Central Oklahoma erased a double-digit halftime deficit and pulled off a double-digit win Saturday at Northeastern State.

Central Oklahoma 75, Northeastern 62.

"I'm so proud of the way these guys are fighting," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We were really flat in the first half but the guys didn't let that get them down. They responded and played great in the second half. I'm really proud of them."

Central improved to 22-4 with the win and the Bronchos are now 17-3 in the MIAA. UCO is back in first place in the league standings too. Northwest Missouri lost a home game against Washburn Saturday and the Bronchos move a half-game ahead of the Bearcats (16-3) in the MIAA standings.

There are two games left in the regular season. UCO is scheduled to host Central Missouri Wednesday and Missouri Southern next Saturday before the 2022 MIAA Championship in Kansas City, Mo. March 2-6.

UCO struggled in the first half Saturday in Tahlequah. The Bronchos led 3-0 thanks to a Jaden Wells 3-pointer, but spent 17:39 of the first half behind. NSU led by as many as 14 points in the first half, which it held at the break, 41-17.

Central shot just 29.0 percent in the first half, making just 9 of 31 total shots. UCO hit four 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and made an off 5 of 10 free-throw attempts.

But the tables turned quickly in the second half.

UCO found an 8-0 run early in the half to close the gap from 14 points to six. That turned into a 15-3 run over the course of a seven-minute span. The last of those two came on Davon Richardson's free-throws with 11:08 to play in the game and that made it a two-point game, 50-48.

Then the Bronchos blew it open.

Central went on an 18-0 run from 10:17 left to 4:35 to play. The 5:42 span, UCO hit 6 of 10 shots, a pair of 3-pointers, and all four free-throw attempts during that time.

UCO outscored Northeastern State 48-21 in the second half to earn the 13-point victory, 75-62.
