No. 15 Central Oklahoma Clipped By Mules

EDMOND – No. 15 Central Oklahoma missed a shot in the final seconds Wednesday night and suffered a setback, 70-69, to visiting Central Missouri in an MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

UCO had a 69-67 lead and the Bronchos got a stop on defense with 10 seconds to play, but a tipped rebound ended up in the hands of the hottest shooter on the floor and UCM knocked down a big 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds let in the game.

Central called timeout and drew up its play. Callen Haydon got the ball in the corner, pump faked a shot and took one dribble and step to his left. He pulled up for the game-winner but it rimmed out. UCM corralled the rebound as time expired.

"We had a chance and it just didn't fall," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "I think we could have done a lot of things better and not been in that situation in the first place, but we had a chance to win the game and one of our best players took it. It just didn't go tonight."

Haydon finished the game 5-for-14 from the floor, 0-for-3 on 3-point attempts, and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. He had a game-high six assists, right at his season average, and also had three rebounds and two steals.

Isaiah Wade led Central Oklahoma on Wednesday. The senior forward went a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and also made a pair of free-throws. He scored 16 points and had six rebounds.

Jaden Wells also scored in double figures, posting 14 points on 3 of 9 shooting. He went 2-for-7 from behind the arc and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Wells also had six rebounds and added two assists and a steal.

Four Bronchos grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Camryn Givens, who scored nine points, and Davon Richardson, who added eight off the bench, joined Wade and Wells with six boards in the game. That helped Central Oklahoma outrebound Central Missouri 34-27.

Jalyn Turner also scored four points for the Bronchos. Preston Aymond scored five off the bench. He and Richardson made up all 13 of Central Oklahoma's bench points.

Central Oklahoma shot an even 50 percent from the floor on Wednesday. The Bronchos were 49.9 percent on all shots taken this season. UCO was 26-for-52 overall.

Central Oklahoma did go just 4-for-18 on 3-point attempts. Wells hit two and Givens and Aymond both made one from outside. UCO was 13-for-18 from the free-throw line.

Now UCO turns its focus to the final game of the 2021-22 regular season. UCO is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings with one game remaining. Central Oklahoma, Northwest Missouri, and Fort Hays State are all 17-4 in league play.

The Bronchos beat Fort Hays twice this season and beat Northwest once, giving UCO the tiebreaker over both teams. If Central Oklahoma can win in the season finale against Missouri Southern Saturday at 3:30 p.m., the Bronchos will claim a share of the MIAA regular season title.

Northwest Missouri is hosting Fort Hays State on Saturday. The winner will be either co-champs with the Bronchos or take the title outright if Central stumbles in the finale.

The 2022 MIAA Basketball Championships are up next week. The Bronchos would be the No. 1 seed in the 10-team tournament with a win on Saturday and will be the No. 2 seed with a loss.
