EDMOND (Feb. 18) – Shayleigh Odom drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Terin Ritz threw four shutout innings as Central Oklahoma plastered Chadron State 8-0 Friday night at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
The No. 16-ranked Bronchos pounded out 10 hits in ending the game after five innings on the eight-run rule to finish off first-day play in the Broncho Invitational. It was the seventh straight win for UCO, which improved to 9-2.
Central returns to action at 12:45 p.m. Saturday against Harding, then plays single games again Sunday and Monday.
"We did a lot of good things today," said head coach Cody White, whose team gave up just one run while cranking out 19 hits in beating Oklahoma Baptist and Chadron. "I was really pleased with what we did offensively and our pitchers really threw well. There's still a lot of room for growth, but I like the way we're progressing."
Odom, Jaycee Minter and Lexy Dobson had two hits apiece to pace the offense. Ritz started in the circle and gave up just two hits while striking out six in going the first four innings before Isie Cox closed out the final frame.
The Bronchos didn't waste time taking control, scoring three runs in their first at bat.
Shayla Harper led off the inning with a double to center field and raced home on Brighton Gilbert's single through the left side. UCO ended up loading the bases with a pair of walks and two runs scored on Odom's two-out drive to the right-center field gap, with Odom getting thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit to a triple.
Odom drove in another run in the third as the Bronchos made it 4-0. Jacee Minter opened the inning with a double to right-center and went to third on Ritz's infield single before trotting home when Odom lined a single to left.
The onslaught continued in the fourth with another three-run outburst.
Harper drew a lead-off walk to get things going and went to second on an error before working her way out of a rundown to take third as Gilbert made it to second on a fielder's choice. Dubler drove in both runners with a triple to right-center and Minter followed with a single to center field to up UCO's cushion to 7-0.
The Bronchos ended it in the fifth when Dobson led off with a double down the left field line and scored on an error.
