Bronchos Whip RSU

CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 18 Central Oklahoma quickly erased a halftime deficit and the Bronchos didn't let go of their second-half lead in route to an 89-79 victory over Rogers State Wednesday night.

Jaden Wells scored a career-high 32 points. He went 8-for-13 from the floor, including tying a career-high best with seven made 3-pointers, and the second-year freshman also made all nine of his free-throw attempts.

"The guys did a good job of not letting up," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "It was back and forth early and we were down at halftime but the guys just kept playing. And when we got the lead they kept working. That was a good win tonight and we hope we can keep playing at this level."

Central Oklahoma dropped in the national rankings this week following a midweek setback last Tuesday. But the Bronchos, who were listed fifth in the initial NCAA Regional rankings on Wednesday, erased a six-point halftime deficit and swept the season series with Rogers State thanks to a big performance by Wells.

He hit his first 3-pointer on the game's first possession. He hit another to give Central an early 7-6 lead. He hit two more late in the first half as UCO worked to keep the early deficit a small gap. Wells hit three more 3-pointers in the second half to tie his career best seven made 3-pointers.

Wells has hit seven 3-pointers in a game three times this season, once in each of the last three months. UCO is also 3-0 when he does. Wells hit seven in a win over Emporia State in Edmond in December, again in a win at Central Missouri, and again on Wednesday night at Rogers State.

Isaiah Wade also had a big game for the Bronchos. The senior forward scored 23 points and had six rebounds. Wade was named to the Small College Basketball's Bevo Francis Award Top 50 watchlist earlier this week. He made 7 of 12 shots and 8 of 11 free-throws. He also made his only 3-pointer, which put the nail in the coffin on Rogers State Wednesday night. Wade sank a 3-pointer to give the Bronchos an 81-71 lead with about a minute to play.

Callen Haydon scored 12 points to go with six assists. He was just 1-for-9 from the floor, but was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Camryn Givens scored 10 points and had two rebounds.

UCO did only have 12 bench points on Wednesday. Preston Aymond scored seven, Davon Richardson had three, and Carson Calavan added two on a pair of free-throws.

Central Oklahoma shot 43.8 percent from the floor on Wednesday. The Bronchos were 21-for-48 overall and 11-for-21 (52.4 pct.) from behind the 3-point line. UCO also made 36 of 39 free-throws in the game. The 36 makes from the line ties a season-high for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up a three-game road trip on Saturday at Northeastern State. The Bronchos are looking to take that season series as well after beating the Riverhawks in Edmond last month. UCO is scheduled to close out the regular season next week with home games against Central Missouri on Wednesday and Missouri Southern on Saturday.
