Bronchos Run-Rule Southern Nazarene

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team earned its second run-rule victory in as many days Wednesday when the Bronchos posted an 11-1 victory over Southern Nazarene at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma is now 5-3 on the early season. The Bronchos also run-ruled East Central 17-7 on Tuesday in Ada, Oklahoma.

"Almost all of our runs came in one inning and we'd like to be a little more consistent than that," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "But we got the win and we got a chance to give some more guys at bats. It's always good when you win no matter how it comes."

UCO had one hit through three innings of play, but a nine-run fourth put the game away. The Bronchos added two in the bottom of the seventh to go up by 10 runs, evoking the run-rule.

Coby Grimsley picked up his first win as a Broncho. He threw five innings, allowed three hits and three walks, but only gave up one run while striking out eight batters to earn the win. Jacob Bailey threw two innings of relief work and struck out three more batters himself. He allowed three hits and one walk but kept SNU at bay.

Central scattered 11 hits in the game and four Bronchos had two hits each on Wednesday.

Garrett Takamatsu, Alex Austin, Seth Gray and Dave Janssen each had two base knocks. Austin and Gray both had two RBIs in the game too. Kaleb Glass led the Bronchos with three RBIs, all coming with one swing of the bat.

Noah Olson scored the first run of the game for the Bronchos in the bottom of the fourth, crossing home plate thanks to a bases-loaded wild pitch from SNU. He tied the game, 1-1.

Austin singled up the middle on the next at bat and scored Shane Nixon and Austin Lambert to give UCO a 3-1 lead. Janssen singled to center field two batters later and scored Austin to make it 4-1.

Clayton Peterson singled to right to score Gray, who got on with a single of his own between Austin and Janssen. That made it 5-1.

Southern Nazarene changed pitchers twice in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Bronchos rallied behind each change.

Glass smacked a three-run home run on the first pitch he saw from reliever Kason Jackson to score Janssen and Peterson and give UCO an 8-1 lead. Takamatsu homered on the first pitch he saw from Jackson and it was 9-1.

Another pitching change in the bottom of the seventh and the Bronchos rallied again.

Nixon singled to right field and advanced to second on the throw. Austin doubled off the wall in right center to put runners on second and third with no outs. Then Gray stepped up to the plate and delivered the walkoff.

He swung on the first pitch he saw and drove a ball to left. He stood up running into second as Nixon and Austin scored to give UCO the 11-1 lead and end the ballgame.

Central Oklahoma is off this weekend and has one more midweek non-conference game next week before opening MIAA play. The Bronchos host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Feb. 22 and will travel to Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. next weekend for the first three of 33 MIAA games this season.
