UCO Splits Doubleheader In Denver

DENVER – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team split a doubleheader with Metro State University Denver Sunday, winning the first game 10-7 before falling 5-4 in the three-game non-conference series' rubber match Sunday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma is 3-3 this season after two weeks of play. The Bronchos lost to MSU Denver on Friday in a game that was moved up one hour due to weather. The team's postponed Saturday's Game 2 for the same cause before playing two nine-inning affairs Sunday.

"I was really happy with the way the team responded in the first game," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "You're going to lose but we responded in a really good way. We played well in the second game and battled for the lead, but unfortunately we just gave one away late."

Central led 8-0 and then 10-2 in the first game before fending off a late rally for the 10-7 win. After trailing 3-0 early in the second game, the Bronchos rallied to go ahead 4-3. A bottom of the eighth run by MSU Denver gave the Roadrunners the 5-4 victory.

UCO swallowed a run-rule defeat on Friday and after a day off to think about it, the Bronchos came out fighting.

Central scored three runs in the top of the first inning Sunday. Landen Wood singled with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error when Austin Lambert reached on a fielder's choice. Garrett Takamatsu knocked a single to right center to score Wood for the first run of the game.

After Noah Olson struck out, Kaleb Glass did too, but he reached on a wild pitch and Lambert scored on the play to make it 2-0. Shane Nixon followed with an RBI single to center field to score Takamatsu and give the Bronchos the early 3-0 lead.

After Chase Lorg got off to a solid start on the bump, getting a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, the Broncho offense was back at it.

Dave Janssen led off with a single to left and moved to second on a sac-bunt from Clayton Peterson. Wood singled again and scored Janssen on the play to make it 4-0.

Another three-up, three-down inning from Lorg, that included two strikeouts, and then more offense for the Bronchos.

Nixon singled an 0-1 pitch to third base and soon advanced to second on a wild pitch. Seth Gray singled to third too and Nixon made to that bag. After Gray stole second, Janssen grounded out to short and Nixon scored to make it 5-0.

In his second AB of the day, Peterson belted a home run to left field and the two-run shot gave the Bronchos a 7-0 lead.

Lorg gave up his second hit of the game in the third, but only faced four batters in keeping the defense off the field.

Takamatsu made it 8-0 in the top of the fourth with a one-out home run to right center field.

MSU Denver finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of unearned runs after a two-out error by Central. The Bronchos got those two back in the fifth. Wood singled for the third time in as many at bats to score Gray and Lambert scored Peterson on a sac-fly to make it 10-2, UCO.

Lorg gave up his only earned run of the game in the sixth. He put two on before handing the ball to Lawson Isaacs, who allowed one of those to score on a bases loaded fielder's choice.

Lorg final line was five innings pitched, five hits allowed and two walks issued. He struck out three batters and allowed three runs.

MSU Denver got three runs closer in the seventh and scored one in the bottom of the ninth before the Bronchos finished off the 10-7 victory.

Wood led UCO with three hits in the first game Sunday. He went 3-for-5 with one run scored. Peterson (2-for-3), Takamatsu (2-for-4) and Nixon (2-for-5) all had multi-hit games as well. Lambert, Gray and Janssen each had one hit.

Isaacs threw one inning and struck out two batters. A.J. Ozorio-Brace gave up two hits and three earned runs in the seventh inning before Beaux Bonvillain came in to help. He threw 2 1/3 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run, and struck out two batters.

Kyler Patterson came on in the ninth to finish off the win. He threw 2/3 of an inning and got a pop-up and a ground out to close the game.

Metro State opened the final game of the three-game series with an early lead thanks to a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, but UCO responded with four in the top half of the next inning to regain the lead.

Tamakatsu homered and scored Lambert to make it 3-2. Nixon scored on a Zac Freeman groundout and then Glass scored on a Gray single to left field to give UCO a 4-3 lead.

Tucker Elliott had another strong start for the Bronchos, striking out eight batters in four innings. He gave up three hits, including the early home run, but only walked one batter of the 19 he faced on Sunday.

Jase Farmer came on for Elliott to start the bottom of the fifth and continued striking out MSU. He fanned the first two he faced, but he did give up a solo home run after that. Farmer threw two innings and struck out four, allowing two hits and the one run.

Isaacs came back out to pitch in the second game. He struck out two in the final two innings, but allowed three hits, including the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

UCO scattered six hits in the second game. Peterson, Wood, Takamatsu, Nixon, Glass and Gray all had base hits. Takamatsu's homer was the only extra-base knock.

Central Oklahoma has a pair of midweek non-conference games on the schedule for this week. The Bronchos travel Tuesday to Ada, Oklahoma to take on East Central before hosting Southern Nazarene Wednesday at Wendell Simmons Field.
