Bronchos Claw Back Before Falling To Lions

Central Oklahoma Erased an Early Lead In Near Upset of No. 4 Missouri Southern

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma found itself in a giant deficit early in the first quarter Thursday night and the Bronchos never fully recovered in a 72-61 loss against No. 4 Missouri Southern at Hamilton Field House.

UCO is 4-3 on the season following the loss and the Bronchos a 1-2 in the MIAA.

"That start just killed us tonight," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "We have to figure out how to play four quarters of basketball. We played really well for three quarters, but just like in our loss last week, you have to be able to put it together for four quarters to have a chance."

Central Oklahoma trailed 16-0 before scoring its first basket 5:12 into the game. The first quarter ended with the game, 21-8. UCO outscored MSSU 53-51 over the next three quarters.

The Bronchos went 0-for-7 with three turnovers in that first five minutes. By the game's end, UCO shot 37.3 percent from the floor. UCO hit 22 of 59 total shots, 8 of 28 shots from behind the 3-point line, and 9 of 12 shots from the free-throw line.

Alayzha Knapp led the Bronchos with 13 points before fouling out. She went 5-for-9 from the floor, 1-for-4 from behind the arc, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line, adding two blocked shots on the defensive end.

Ginger Reece added nine points off the bench and Lexi Foreman and Tayler Factor also both scored seven points off the bench. UCO's put up 25 bench points on Thursday to 31 for the starting group.

Brooke Rayner, Karly Wadsworth and Aspen Williston all scored six while Aliyah Llanusa had five.

UCO cut the deficit to single digits once in the second quarter, but made a surge in the second half.

A Wadsworth 3-pointer midway through the third quarter cut it to five points, 45-40. A Caley Young layup made it a five-point game again with three minutes left in the third. And a pair of free-throws from Factor cut it to three points, 50-47, with 2:43 to play.

It was back to five heading into the fourth quarter. A Foreman 3-pointer with 5:22 to play cut it to two points, 59-57, but that would be as close as the Bronchos could make it. It soon grew back to eight and then settled on the final, 72-61.

Central Oklahoma will play one more home game this weekend when the Bronchos host Pittsburg State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

UCO wraps up the pre-Christmas schedule at Fort Hays State and at Nebraska Kearney next weekend. A New Year's Eve extravaganza with Emporia State is the next time the Bronchos are scheduled to play at Hamilton Field House following Sunday afternoon's matinee.
